Problem with Canada.exe - tried everything to delete!

Question

Hi,   Please check my log.  I cannot delete the canada.exe file.  Everytime I start up my computer I get a 'ClickMe' green icon  It then starts up a window asking if I want to dial out at $2.99 per minute.  Thanks so much!! linda,   i've edited my reply ---- several times ----  for consideration of the Elite ToolBar (in addition to the Canada.exe you're concerned about);  as well as for suggestions offered to me by zbestwun   if you saw the preliminary/unedited version, you may want to re-read things. Edit:  (with credit to zbestwun) Linda:   you're running HJT from a temp folder.... it's best to run it from a 'permanent' location, such as C:\HJT  , because you want to save all the things it backs up... just in case you want/need to restore something at a future date.  make this move first, before you do any of the following.       open HiJackThis again: (If this appears, Click 'Config...') Click ' Open the Misc Tool section' Click ' Open Process manager' click on (i.e, highlight) c:\canada.exe click ' Kill process'.   click on ' Back' click ' Config' click ' delete a file on reboot' where it says, 'Look in', click the arrow, and choose ' C:'           and in the box of files, click on Canada.exe           then click OK when it asks you if you want to restart your computer now, say ' NO' note: you should TRY to repeat this step, looking for another copy of Canada.exe in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\     folder, and if found there , set it for delete on reboot as well.   click on ' Back' click ' Scan' click the boxes in front of each the following entries:       R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing   O1 - Hosts: 64.12.152.18 search.netscape.com   O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ ASDPLUGIN] C:\WINDOWS\system32\canada.exe -N       please note:     in addition to Canada.exe, you also have something known as the Elite ToolBar, which I am assuming you don't want.   if you choose to try to remove this as well,  click the boxes in front of each the following entries:   R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://searchmiracle.com/sp.php   O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [etbrun] C:\windows\system32\elitedrb32.exe   (We may need to run a separate tool to remove these, if this first attempt doesn't work.)     edit: zbestwun also recommends you click on the following 2 entries (unless you personally know precisely what these are, and if you specifically wanted/needed them for some application you're running):   O16 - DPF: {140F03AE-0588-11D4-BD45-0050048A82BF} (eShare Web Collaboration Class) - http://63.166.193.103/netagent/objects/emagic.cab   O16 - DPF: {D4328549-2B43-40D5-BBF8-77D6EEA60412} (StorefrontUpload.BulkImageUpload1) - http://www.ldphotostation.com/images/global/activex/StorefrontUpload19.CAB     double check, be sure you have clicked the above, and only the above... when you're certain, then click on ' FIX CHECKED'   close HiJack This. Let's try to delete these entries in SAFE MODE:

Reboot your PC, and as it starts to boot-up, tap the F8 key....

rather than booting 'normally', it should offer you several choices, including to boot in SAFE MODE.

after it complete the safe-mode booting process,

open HiJackThis

click " Scan"

click the boxes in front of each the following two entries

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [etbrun] C:\windows\system32\elitedrb32.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ ASDPLUGIN] C:\WINDOWS\system32\canada.exe -N

click on " FIX CHECKED"

close HiJack This.

next, open Windows Explorer

(on my PC, using win98se, i can get there from

START / Programs / Windows Explorer

but it may be different in your win XP version)

edited comment: I just tried a colleague's XP machine:

START / All Programs / Accessories / Windows Explorer )

In the Left-hand column (labeled FOLDERS),

click on My Computer

click on Local Disk C:

click on WINDOWS

it may warn you about viewing hidden files/folders... if so, say it's okay

then click on SYSTEM32

On the RIght-hand side (file NAMEs),

click on and highlight elitedrb32.exe (if it's there), RIGHT-click, and choose DELETE.

click on and highlight canada.exe (if it's there), RIGHT-click, and choose DELETE.

hopefully, the operating system will allow you to delete these files (if they were present)... however, don't be surprised if you get some message like, they're "protected" and can't be deleted... because these programs often do whatever they can to resist removal.

close windows explorer.

REBOOT your computer --- NORMALLY, this time --- and let's see what happens.

re-run HiJack this, and post a revised log.

I figured out how to fix this problem.   All you have to do is go to http://www.searchmiracle.com, and on the bottom left corner there is a link that says 'uninstall', right-click > Save Target As.. and save it somewhere, run it, and the thing should be gone.
