I know the log looks funny. especially all the O23 paths. But the registry makes no refernces to that path. Does anyone have any ideas as to where to go to fix this or is this just a system reload?

mehherc,

That does look very odd! Do you have this folder on your system? If so, are there any files in it?

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\WINDOWS\System32

Midnight Star,
No, those particular directories are not even existant on the system. So, to me, that is saying that a registry entry of some kind got completely hosed and messed up. As I see, there must be a way to fix, but I cannot find any references to that path in the registry. Hence, the quandary. Reformat and reload or is it somewhere else?

mehherc,

Before you do that, let me another set of eyes on this; it might just be a bug in HiJackThis - i'm not sure. The person who'll be stepping in is to look the O23 entries over, will be ChrisRLG from www.malwareremoval.com.

I looked at this log earlier - yes it looks strange.

Can I ask from the running processes at least one of those O23 lines is active.

Have you done a over install of the operating system - do these folders exist in that folder structure.

What it looks like is a second install of windows with using a non default folder to install windows into.

So please confirm that this folder structure does exist, and if a second install was done to try to solve the problems.

No, I did not do an over install of the os nor did anyone else.
none of the O23 processes are in use. The path they are refering to are not even existant. However, the processes refered to are running from the proper locations.  That is the question as why does Hijack this show that other path? Is it a bug in Hijack this or what? Sorry for not saying this earlier, but the OS is Windows 2003 Server. The reason for me running Hijack This is that from the server, browsing has difficulty and downloading some propriety software updates or anything from download.com or then anything just anything that I need to download cannot complete. Also, any window that pops up from within IE will not display. It only displays a blank page. As in no error, no display, just a page that shows white. Yes, I did scan for viruses and adware and spyware and security holes. It is possible I missed something. But that is why I am here with this post.

Also, something else...look at the O10. That path isn't there either.

The only time I have seen something like this before was on a FAT32 system that had a borked directory system. Only thing I could do (long time ago) was reformat.

You see this is in the running processes.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe

so looks like that folder system does exist - at least this program looks like it is running from it.

I see this is a windows 2003 server too.

I assume it is using NTFS and not Fat32.

Does scandisk/chkdsk give any errors.

Is this running on a 64bit windows system ? IE what processor does it have.

The system is a P4 2.4 with 1 gig of ram
yes, this is running in NTFS
Scandisk/chkdsk shows no errors in the NTFS or the surface
And the OS is standard W2K3

Thanks for helping me confirm my first suspicion. As the saying goes, "Oh well, Life's a B***H"

Then I am sorry to say I think your folder structure is borked.

Where you go from here I dont know - if mine I would re install.

Sorry.
