Registry Cleaners revisited
I realize this subject has been beaten to death in this board, but Gary Woodruff over at aumha posted a particularly good response today to the question "So - What are the facts, what is the evidence?" on this topic, with the perspective of one who was there from the beginning:
"I sat in Summit sessions at Microsoft as Redmond on this subject starting almost 10 years ago. I was a regular user of Registry Cleaners, first Microsoft's own SCAN REG ...
... My final word is they do no real good, they expose one to the chance of a serious problem and if no Registry backup has been made possibly a reinstall of the OS. Though I was a past promoter or Registry Cleaners when they were helpful I categorically recommend they not be used with WinXP or Vista by anyone that do not suffer from the orderliness compulsion."

I have to tend to agree. Unless one is very very familuar with the registry and how things work then reg cleaners can do a whole of damage.

Been using CCleaner for years now; never a spec of troubles with it. Right now I have it customized to clean up what I want, but I've used it for three years in full default mode with the cleansing of everything.... again, no troubles at all.
off topic >>> I can barely read this small type within the forum. Any smaller and I'll need a magnifying glass.

I agree about having to squint when typing a reply. And then there is the matter of having to right scroll a bit to see all the message....:emotion-7:
I have never cleaned the registry. I know just enough about it to be afraid of even touching it . I downloaded CCleaner awhile back and have even been nervous about using it. I prefer to manually clean out my temp files now and then and selectively delete the cookies because of passwords. If I remember BB had put up a page awhile ago suggesting the areas for CCleaner to clean and the steps for doing it correctly. I believe it cleans up the index.dat files also, but have no idea of how large that folder is or what of a slowing effect in might have.
