Hi,

Yes Spysweeper informed me of the virus...i quarantined it...ran it again...and it was still there so i quarantined it and deleted it and...it's still there...now the Hjckpk-A doesnt sow up but the Items Detected show:  System Monitor Found: potentially rootkit-masked registry (Threat Marked as Always Remove)...even though it stays nicely hidden in my files

 

My PC won't even allow me to download spybot...so I'm really hoping that it can get resolved before I use that system restore...

 

Any help you could give me would be appreciated :)

Welcome :) Was it SpySweeper that informed you of the infection? Have you had any symptoms other than the alert? You are using SpySweeper with Anti-virus included?

I am reviewing your log.
In the meantime, you can help me by doing the following:

* Have you have posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it.
Definition of cracked software:

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer. That includes torrents.
The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. If you have music files in those programs' folders that you want to save, please move those music files to another directory.

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* Have you already fixed entries using HijackThis? If so, please restore all the backups and then post another log.

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures.
Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using.

* During the course of our cleanup please do not do any online work or surfing until we have verified that your system is clean.

* We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case.
Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them.

Are you using SpySweeper Anti-spyware, or SpySweeper with anti-virus included? There is a difference.

Basically, you are saying that SS found the infection. You deleted it from quarantine, but SS keeps finding that it has reinstalled?

Forgot to say, The scan automatically deletes it...at least is says it does...

It's called Webroot AntiVirus with Antispyware...they recently changed the name..

 

Yeah everytime I run the program it comes up withthe System Monitor Error reported in my previous message...can't see it right now to retype it...

 

The first time I quarantined I did a full reboot and the message appeared still when running the scan...

now I can just run the scan and it appears...it automatically removes it and then I can run it again and there it is...

Okay, let's see what MBAM does with it. First, please disable SpySweeper, so it does not interfere.


Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
      • The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
      • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
      • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
      • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
      • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
      • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
      • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. :(see Note below)
      • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
      • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
      • Please include a fresh HijackThis log as well.
        Notes:

        **If you encounter this message:"c:\program files\malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll Unable to register the dll/ocx: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x5" Click on ignore mbamext.dll

        **If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

      SpySweeper is in your Running Processes again.
      Please make sure SpySweeper is not running so that it does not interfere with removals.

      Also disable AOL Spyware Protector and SpywareDoctor.

      To disable Spyware Doctor from running on your system startup:
      1. First, disable the OnGuard Tools. This way, when you exit Spyware Doctor, these tools won't stay resident in the background.
      2. Click the "Settings" button on the left side.3. Click the "Startup Settings" link.
      4. Uncheck "Run at Windows Startup".
      5. Click the "Apply" button.
      Exit by a right-click on the "Spyware Doctor" icon in the system tray and choose "Exit".
      [To enable Spyware Doctor when you are finished, open the program, Settings>Startup Settings> CHECK "Run at Windows Startup">APPLY
      Exit. Reboot.]

      To disable PCTools Browser Monitor: If you are running Internet Explorer, click Tools > Manage Add-ons. If PCTools Browser Monitor is on the list, click it & select Disable. You will need to restart your browser after making the change.


      Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to the following:

      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

      Also fix this if you did not set restrictions in the Control Panel:
      O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

      Close all other windows and click "Fix Checked".
      Close Hijackthis.

      Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile:
      Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
      Please make sure only the following are checked:
      -- Downloaded Program Files
      -- Temporary Internet Files
      -- Recycle Bin
      -- Temporary Files
      Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

      REBOOT.

      Check to be sure SpySweeper,  AOL Spyware Protector, and SpywareDoctor are still disabled.

      Please perform this online scan: F-Secure Online Scanner
      The online scanner is on the bottom right of the page.

      Follow the directions on the F-Secure page for proper Installation.

      * You may receive an alert on the address bar at this point to install the ActiveX control.
      * Click on that alert and then click " Install ActiveX component".
      * Read the license agreement and click " Accept".
      * Click " Custom Scan" and be sure the following are checked:
      • Scan whole System

      • Scan all files
      • Scan whole system for rootkits
      • Scan whole system for spyware
      • Scan inside archives
      • Use advanced heuristics

      * When the scan completes, click the " I want to decide item by item" button.
      * For each item found, Select " Disinfect" and click " Next".

      * When done, click the " Show Report" button, then copy and paste the entire report into your next reply with a new HijackThis log and let me know how things are running.

      You may enable SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, and AOL Spyware Protection again.

      Hi,

       

      I tried following all the tasks and ran into the following:

       

      SpySweeper.exe - i am denied turning this off in the processes...won't allow me to do anything

       

      When I tried to run the F Online Scanner...it ran for 10% of the download and then stopped saying it would try to reconnect (sorry I didn't write down the exact error, my browsers (IE and Firefox) wouldnt work for about 10 minutes after).  

       

      I will try this again tomorrow and try to post results, unless you have an alternative option...

      It's up to you. It depends on whether you have backups, too. If you want to keep looking for the problem:
      # Please download >F-Secure Blacklight (fsbl.exe) and save to your C:\ drive.
      # Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
      # Copy/paste or type the following in the command window:
      #: C:\fsbl.exe /expert
      # Hit " Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
      # Accept the user agreement and click " Next".
      # Click " Scan".
      # After the scan is complete, click " Next", then " Exit". BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named " fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
      # The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present...like "wbemtest.exe".
      # Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

      **Note: If you download Blacklight to your desktop, just double-click to run from there and it will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.

      Well, I've never done a restore before...and I'd rather try everything possible...and i don't have backups...but i can burn what is needed off onto disks...

      Okay, let me know how it goes. I'd like to see if you really have a problem or whether SpySweeper has misinterpreted something and you are getting a False Positive.
