services.exe - Application Error

Have an Inspiron 8600 running on Windows XP-Pro.  Have had this laptop for about a year now.  This problem started about 3 months ago.  After about 3-4 hours of the laptop being continuously on, the following error message pops up:

“services.exe – Application Error

The instruction at “0x606d3352” referenced at “0x00000028”. The memory could not be “read”.

Click OK to terminate program.

Click CANCEL to debug program.”

When I click OK the following message pops up:

System Shutdown

This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off.  Any unsaved changes will be lost.  This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.

Time Before Shutdown:

Message

The message process “C:\\windows\system32\services.exe” terminated unexpectedly with status code -1. The system will now shutdown and restart.

When I click CANCEL to debug the program the system just locks up.

I have reloaded Windows XP Service Pack 2, but I am still getting the same problem.

I have also run Symantec W32.Blaster.Worm Fix Tool 1.0.6.1.  It did not find any problems.  I ran Symantec Antivirus with an updated virus def and it did not find any threats.

Pls help.

You might try hijackthis at http://majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
and Ad-Aware,  Avast or AVG.

Jimmy, what will hijackthis do for me?  I tried all the recommendations that you suggested and I will have no resolution.

Maybe nothing, but when you call tech support you have some info that might save some time.

Since you say the problem occurs " A fter about 3-4 hours of the laptop being continuously on", is it possible that this is a hardware/overheating problem?

The bottom of my laptop does get very hot.  Will this message pop up when it gets too hot on the bottom?  I called tech support before and they had me shut down the laptop, take out the power cord, pop out the memory cards and depress the power button for 15 seconds.  But the problem persists.  It this is an overheating problem, any resolution for this problem?

i'm just offering a "gut" feel about your problem.... it just sounds more like an overheating problem, than a software (specifically, virus) problem.

here are a few questions you might want to consider?  (not that I'm actually asking you to answer them here... just ponder them):   does you laptop have a fan?  if so, is it running properly?  and do you have adequate ventilation around it?   what about your working/environmental conditions? --- what's the temperature/humidity where you work/live?  and are you operating your system in direct sunlight?

i think you might have a better chance getting an answer to your problem by posting your question in another forum.... my suggestion would be the Inspiron - General Hardware forum, here:

(if you check the list of available forums, you might find an even more appropriate one)

Check for viruses and spyware. If you don't find any, this helped me: Boot into safe mode Start > Run enter “msconfig” disable everything and see if problem goes away. (boot.ini, services, startup items) If it does, re-enable things until the symptom reappears and troubleshoot the boot.ini, or service, or startup item causing the problem. McAfee Antivirus has been at fault in the past. You’ll need to boot into safe mode to run msconfig again once the symptom comes back. Once you've isolated the components that are causing the problem, you'll need to figure out how to reinstall those components. If that doesn’t help, A rootkit detected by AVG anti-rootkit was found to be the problem in a few cases.

william,

you've just "re-opened" a thread that's been "dormant" for over 2 1/3 years???...
the original poster, Jeda_Knight, has not visited the DELL forums since 08-26-2005  ,
and it's very unlikely that the particular problem is still lingering to the present.
