What symptoms of spyware are you currently having other than slowness?

First, I suggest uninstalling the Ask Toolbar.
More information on its advertising practices here:
http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/ask-toolbars/

You have Sophos Anti-virus, Norton AntiBot, Speeditup Free, and AVG Anti-Spyware all running in realtime. That does tend to use resources.

A couple of questions:
1. Did you notice any change in spyware symptoms after installing Speeditup Free? Did it try to change your homepage or make any other observable changes?

2. Did you ever have Norton Anti-Virus or Norton Internet Security on there? If so how did you remove them?

Let's clean things up a bit and see if that makes any difference.

Download and scan each user profile with CCleaner:
http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp
** Select to download the BASIC version.
1. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK
" Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
2. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies (if you want to keep those).
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.
In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all except cookies (if you want to keep those) in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.
3. Click the " Run Cleaner" button.
4. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
5. Click " OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
6. Click " exit" when done.
REBOOT.

Please update your AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
    • Close AVG AS. Do Not run a scan just yet.

      1. Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

      2. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
      3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
      4. AVG AS will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.

      5. IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG AS is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process. Once the scan is complete do the following:
      6. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
      7. IMPORTANT! Don't save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do it will make it more difficult for the helper to interpret the report.
      8. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
      9. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
      10. Close AVG AS and reboot your system back into Normal Mode. Please post the results of the AVG AS report scan.

      11. Your version of HijackThis is outdated. Please delete that copy and download version 2.02. I'd like to wait until you have the new version before we do anything with that.
Please download HJT Installer for version 2.02 from Here to your desktop.
If not available use this alternate link: Here
        • Click the Download button. When the Trend Micro HJT install box appears, double click on the HJTInstall.exe. Click on Install.
        • It will be installed by default here: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
        • A shortcut to the application will also be placed on your Desktop.
        • The program will open automatically after installation.
        • You can double-click the icon that was placed on the Desktop to run subsequent HijackThis scans or you can use the icon inside the folder. The folder HijackThis is where you will find the HJT logs that you save. When you use the application to remove anything, you will also find the backup copies made by HJT inside this folder.
        • The first time you open HijackThis, check the Main Menu button at the bottom center. When the main menu appears check the box "Show this window when I start HijackThis".
        • Click on "Do a system scan and save logfile." When the log pops up in Notepad, copy and paste that file back here.
        • DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
        • Before closing HJT, please click on the AnalyzeThis button. "Analyze This" DOES NOT mean "Analyze My Log". You will need to post your log on the forum.
        • Close the web page that appears and then close the program

        • Please post your report from AVG AS and a new HijackThis log.

Thank you very very much for your reply

First of all I did have norton internet security but then downloaded norton pre release 2008 beta version[and sophos threat detection test to check beta norton 2008 was working well]

On download.com[since i saw DELL tech support download from that site when doing remote assistant fixing of my computer i tend to trust that site but you never know]  i saw Speeditup Free and it seemed to get good reviews at the time[though more mixed reviews since. i did find it improved speed signiicantly but AVG + adaware keep showing reacurring spyware[i think that happened anyway] Initially i think it tried to change homepage to world usa and i put it back to google ..from time to time it goes to its[speeditup Free] web site[maybe i accidently hit a button to make that happen..other than that i notice no changes..if you advise i can unistall Speeditup Free ..i am here to find out what software is right for my system and what software to get rid off

My main symptoms are the following tracking cookies showing up in AVG antispyware[and unkown origin tracking cookies in Adaware] like trackingcookie.com trackingcookieAdtech.com trackingcookiehitbox.com that keep coming back no matter how many scans i do

My AVG AS Log is :

At the moment, I do not see any major problems in your log, so unless you are having symptoms of spyware, or have a report from AVG AS or Ad-aware with some specific infections we can look for, we don't have much to fix.

I have read reports by some users about Speeditup Free's trying to change the homepage. Let's clean up your blank pages so you can set your homepage to one of your choice.

We will need to temporarily disable some of your realtime monitoring so it does not interfere with GOOD changes that we are going to make to your registry.

    For AVG Anti-Spyware's Guard:
Right-click the system tray icon and uncheck real time protection.

    For TeaTimer:
Go to Start>Run. Type Msconfig > OK. On the next window that opens > Startup tab UNcheck the entry for TeaTimer until this is over...
    1. Open Spybot
    2. Click Mode -> Advanced Mode
    3. Click Yes
    4. Click Tools (located in the bottom left corner) -> Resident
    5. Uncheck 'Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active'
    6. Then close Spybot.
    Reboot.
Verify that Teatimer is not running.
After the cleaning of your system has been completed, reverse these steps and re-enable the protection applets for TeaTimer.

Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to these:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank

The following are optional to fix because they use resources and based on your needs, may be unnecessary to run at Startup. Fixing them here will not prevent you from running them manually as needed.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe
    (Intel hotkey applet -- Unnecessary.)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
    (RealPlayer scheduler--Unnnecessary.)

    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
    (Microsoft Office startup assistant-- Unnecessary.)

Close all windows except Hijackthis and click "Fix Checked".
    Close HijackThis and reboot.

**Don't forget to enable your realtime monitoring by AVG AS and TeaTimer again.

I do not see any Java on your system.Even if you have an outdated version, older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. It is possible that you may be running Java code in your applications that absolutely require a specific version of the JRE to run. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
    • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2 allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.

Let me know how things are running after that. You are running anti-virus, anti-bot, AVG AS, Spybot, and Ad-aware, so you are doing everything right, but keep in mind that there is no one program that finds everything, and occasionally there will be a false positive.
After your reply, I will give you some additional prevention tips.

Your log is still in good shape. As far as managing cookies, you might want to look into WinPatrol. It will enable you to specify which cookies you do not want. There is a free version available: http://www.winpatrol.com/
To compare with the paid version: http://www.winpatrol.com/whyplus.html?index

You could disable Spybot's TeaTimer because that does tend to slow down the system, and try the free version of WinPatrol to see if it's realtime monitoring does not slow things down as much. (The more you have monitoring, the more resources are being used.) I would not run AVG AS, TeaTimer, and WinPatrol all at the same time in addition to your anti-virus if you are concerned with slowness. All that would definitely use resources.

Here are my standard Prevention Tips, but you already have a good anti-virus and anti-spyware, so anything else that you add would be your choice. TrendProtect (see #11) would be a good thing to add if you don't already use something similar, such as McAfee's SiteAdvisor or FireTrust's SiteHound. I use both TrendProtect and SiteHound.

You may have already taken some of these steps:
    1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
    Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

    2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
    Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

    3. Download and install the following free programs:
    a. SpywareBlaster:
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
    Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
    b. SpywareGuard:
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
    Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial50.html
Periodically check for updates in both programs.

    4. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (Zone Labs) http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?lid=home_freedownloads
Sunbelt Kerio has a free version: http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html

    5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
    http://www.mozilla.org/

    6. Install spyware detection and removal programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.

    a. Ad-aware: http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

    b. SpyBot S&D: http://safer-networking.org/en/news/2005-05-31.html

I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Ad-aware frequently.

    7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List.
    Here is the link:
    http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

    8. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/
** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar that is checked by default for the Standard version, or download the toolbar-free versions (Slim or Basic) when given the option for those.

    9. If you use Adobe Reader it may need to be updated to be sure that you have a more secure version. If you are using a version prior to v. 6.05, you should update to 6.05, preferably version 8.1.0.
It would be best to remove prior versions before updating to a new version.
If you need additional assistance, the Adobe forums are here: http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/main.html

    10. Make sure you are using the most updated version of Java.
The current version is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2

You can go here to download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
Scroll down to where it says " Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2 allows end-users to run Java applications".

Click the link to download the Windows (Offline Installation) package: Save it, do not run it. When the download is complete, close the browser.

Remove all prior versions using Add/Remove Programs, and delete the Java folder in Program Files.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.
    Reboot.

    11. Practice Safe Surfing with with TrendProtect by Trendmicro.
TrendProtect is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. TrendProtect also adds a new button to your browser's toolbar area. The icon and color of the button changes to indicate whether the page currently open is safe, unsafe, trusted, or unrated, or whether it contains unwanted content.

The following color codes are used by TrendProtect to indicate the safety of each site.

    Red for Warning
    Yellow for Use Caution
    Green for Safe
    Grey for Unknown

You have a lot of monitoring going on there. All of it will slow your computer down because all is trying to run while your browser is running. You might want to consider disabling TeaTimer and AVG's Guard (You will need to enable that whenever you scan, though.) Norton Products will slow down your PC as well, and you are using a component of Internet Security along with Sophos.
If you want to try removing Norton to see if that makes a difference, you can do it via Add/Remove and then run this tool available here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
You can always reinstall it later as long as you keep your product key.

As long as your problem is slowness and not malware, I'll refer you to these articles:
    http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=si_virus&thread.id=58687

If that does not help, perhaps the Windows XP Board can offer some suggestions.

I am sorry i have not replied

    I have mixed news

On the plus side it could be all the norton internet security software and the other security monitoring that is slowing up my system as i found when i did not have norton my computer went abit quicker[i was updating from norton internet security 2007 to 2008 and had to temporarily remove my norton internet security. i also notice the 2008 version does not slow down the system as much

    The bad news

I am still in a quandry as to which antispyware and anti virus to use and whcih combinations. I also alas seem to have lost my CD drive to spyware recently..it won't read any CD's[this happened me before and i had to get DELL tech support to reinstall OS again and don't want that to happen for the third time so i am going to submit this hijact this log.[i am assuming its not a hardware problem]

I want to thank you so very much for all your help..your advice helped the last time..so thanks

It has been over a month since you last posted in this forum. Too much has changed if you reinstalled the OS. I see that you have changed some of your security software as well.
    * Please note this information on Spyware Seizer:
    ttp://www.malwarebytes.org/database.php?id=269

Please post your log as a New Message so one of the analysts can help you. You will need to start a new thread. Thanks.

Anything with "mixed opinions" isn't worth taking a chance as far as I'm concerned. There are many trustworthy applications available.

    September 18th, 2007 10:00

Thank you for that..The ultimate reason i joined this forum is because i do not really know how you know which appications are "trustworthy" and which aren't exactly...i hope to get advice on that ..I had to get DELL tech support to help me reinstall the OS in Dec 2005 and again in May 2007 and then i decided to join here to stop it happening again

    thanks

This is what i know[based on what i have read ..i call myself stupid student for the very reason that i
don't know how to keep my computer spyware free and always go for the wrong antispyware..hopefully the board can put me right on that ]

How dare I criticise anybody but myself..i have no right to be critical of anybody but myself
