Slow computer

My inspiron 8600 is very slow to boot (blue screen stays on over a min) and shut down.  It takes a long time to load thumbnails of photos in windows explorer.  It has a 1.6 processor and 768mb of memory.  The hard drive is about half full.  I also have a second 8600 with less memory and a 1.4 processor that is at least 10 times faster in loading the same photo thumbnail file of photos in windows explorer.  It also boots much faster.  I have run Norton A/V and several spy programs as instructed and found nothing.  I have run the Hijack this program and am sorry to say I do not no how to attach it to this message.

Run Hijackthis.  Select the top option.  It will scan your system and create a log file in notepad.  Edit, SelectAll, move the cursor to a Reply to this post and Edit Paste.

It does not appear to be infected.  Suspect your harddrive is stuck in PIO mode.  This is common on XPs.  Supposedly fixed on SP2 but probably not really.

To re-enable the typical, or faster, transfer mode for an affected device:

1.Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.2.Click System Tools, and then click Device Manager.3.Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers node.4.Double-click the controller for which you want to restore the typical DMA transfer mode.5.Click the Driver tab.6.Click Uninstall.7.When the process completes, restart your computer. When Windows restarts, the hard disk controller is re-enumerated and the transfer mode is reset to the default value for each device that is connected to the controller.

Went through the procedure and it did not help.  It shows the current transfer mode as  Ultra DMA 5 for the primary and Ultra DMA 2 as the secondary.   That is the same as my older 8600.

Right click on the clock and select Task Manager then Processes trhen hit the CPU twice.  This should sort things by CPU usage.  The top user should be System Idle with 95% + if not what are the top three?  Select Performance.  How much Total and Avaialble memory does it show?

Start, Rightclick on My Computer and select Manage then Event Viewer.  Look for red marks under Applications or System and open them up and copy them by pressing the bottom of the three buttons.  Then Edit Paste it to a reply.

hpoevm08.exe is having a problem.  This is your HP All in One printer.  Uninstall it and see if the problem goes away.

since ole32.dll was mentioned, Start, Run, sigverif, OK, Start and see if ole32.dll is in the list of unsigned files that it finds.

There is a second hp program having problems:  hpqthb08.exe  This is something to do with HP Image Zone which I presume is instaled by the same box.

It is asking for NAT which makes no sense.  Are you running Internet Connection Sharing so a second computer can use your Internet connection?  Are you connecting via a Wireless connection, Ethernet cable, or dial up?

Sorry I was slow to get back to you.  Have been out town.   I have removed all HP programs and it did not help.  Sigverif shows no unsigned files.  I am using a dial up connection without connection sharing

I suspect that for some reason your PC thinks it has a wireless NIC and is  trying to use it to connect to a network and only after it times out (30 seconds) does it continue the boot.

"Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the WZCSVC service."

I think you can turn it off without anything complaining.

Start, Run, services.msc, OK to bring up the Services window.  In the right pane scroll down to WZCSVC and double click on it.  Set Startup Type to Disabled and apply then reboot.  See if it boots a little faster now.

What events do you see in the event log now after you boot normally?

I did as you suggested but found WZCSVC does not exist in the right  pane of Services.  Prior to going to the forum I did work with a Dell tech on the phone and he had me make some changes in the registry.  After the changes I find my mouse settings need to be reset with each boot, the caps indicator in the lower right corner of my screen is inop , and my norton will not set up to monitor my computer.  These are a few of the things I found and I am sure there are more.

Can't help what a DELL tech tells you to do.  Don't work for them and have no idea what registry changes he might have suggested.  Did he have you make a backup before you made changes?  If so you might be able to back out the changes.

Start, Run, msconfig, OK  then find the services tab and see if you can find the wireless zero configuration service (WZCSVC) and uncheck it.

I know it is not running.  The question is: is its Startup Type: set to Disabled?

I did find wzcsvc in the right pane and it was off so I made no changes.
