Spybot problem

Question

I recently downloaded Spybot.  I ran a scan and found about 60 problems.  It fixed 25 of these problems and the remaining 35 were unable to be fixed because they were running in memory.  I was instructed to restart my computer and run Spybot again.  Since I did this, I am unable to open Windows 98 Second Edition.  When I turn on my computer, I get a blue screen that says 'NAV Autoprotect: Unable to determine the location of the configuration files.'  The only option at this point is to hit 'OK.'  After this, I get an error message that my computer has performed an illegal operation.  The message says 'Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE.'    My desktop has no icons.  Also, when I try to start in safe mode, there are no icons on the desktop.   Has anyone else had this problem with Spybot?  Is there anything I can do to get my computer working again?

I'm running Windows XP (which doesn't help you), and I haven't see any problems like that. Have you tried uninstalling, then re-installing NAV? Or turning off some of the features one, by one, trying to isolate the module that might be causing the problem?

Spybot creates a restore point on my system; on windows 98, i'm not sure.

Exact same thing just happened to me. Has anyone helped you with a solution? Anxiously waiting for assistance.

Have either of you posted this problem in the Windows 98 forum? I can see the obvious implication of a Spybot 'wipeout', but your first priorty might need to be getting your system back up and running. I'm not that familar with windows 98 systems, but i'm hoping someone there might be.   Have you tried using the 'Recovery' option to restore back anything that was previously deleted? Also when your system is back up and running, be sure to post back here with a HiJackThis log from each system, and we'll see if something else is running undetected that might be causing that problem.   -   Mike.

Hi,

I was unable to fix the problem. I think some type of spyware wiped out my desktop. I had to re-install Windows 98. I have since installed Spy Sweeper which seems to be working well. I wish I had some better advice for you.

I also ended up reinstalling Windows 98SE same as Jeter2 did. I'm still not completely recovered, receiving plenty of error messages regarding java, etc., but the computer is usable, but not as great as before. I still have my work cut out for me to get back to square one. Midnight Star says to check out the Windows forum, but I don't see anything of value there.

Hi all,

I think that Midnight Star was on the right track. If you post your problem at the Windows 98 forum (there are a lot of pretty sharp folks that hang out there), someone will be able to help you. I have discovered that often doing a search will not turn up the information that you need

A word about the use of Spybot S&D: this program WILL removed necessary items from your computer if not configured correctly. Only the items in RED should be check marked and "fixed". Items in GREEN or BLACK should never be fixed unless you are certain as to what they are and what their function is. Please read the Spybot S&D tutorial, located in the "Help" menu. Follow theSpybot S&D Tutorial link for an excellent illustrated tutorial.

Ran into same spybot issue today... get the NAV error msg, etc. and i don't have the Win98 disk to reinstall. Did anyone find a way around this issue to get your machine booted up? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.,

Never found a solution. Fortunately I had a spare computer that I put the hard drive in and copied the vital files over and reinstalled 98 (actually I installed XP) and have not run SpyBot on any system since.

I posted this on their forum with no reply.
