Have you tried normal anti-virus software, such as AVG, avast, or Norton AntiVirus?

Perhaps they can help, instead of having to send in for costly repairs.

"Finally Im told that i need to talk to Dell about cleaning out my modem" I have no idea what this means, and I will bet neither does SBC.  An eight year old PC has probably exceeded it life expectency and new monies should not be put into it.  AgentFade2Black's suggestion about running a virus checker is a good one, just make sure it is compatiable with the OS you are running.  I can not imagine you are running Xindows XP on an eight year old PC.

LOL....as a matter of fact I am using Windows XP on an 8 year old computer. Yall hafta know I am very illiterate about computers and my husband more so! We just let my husbands friend come in and set it up for us; he uses windows xp....he used his start up cd....now we have it. We are using SBC Yahoo! Online Protection for our anti-virus scanner and remover....Im guessing that aint good enough? We are tryin to buy a house and really dont have any extra money....especially not to put into a computer that Id LOVE to throw out the window. Im sure my mind will change if we could get it set up right. Something tells me that we should get a whole new computer and start over....which again we cant afford.....*sighs* Is there anything out there Norton or McAfee wise that we can use that we dont hafta pay for? I do know that if I use a free service that they only clean out some of the problems....then it says you need to register it. Again not spending money on a lost cause! If someone can send me an address for a website...thank you!

I suggest, instead of waisting time and effort, get a new hard drive or a completely new computer that actually works.

I don't agree.  Amongst the PCs I used at home is a Dell XPS D300 (Windows XP Pro/SP2, Pentium II 300 MHZ, 384 MBytes RAM) which I bought November 1997.  It is very slow but other than that I have no problems with it.   Replacing a disk or a complete PC, will not/can not solve a virus/malware problem.

Ok then what do I do. I found a reasonable price for an almost new computer that we are going to buy. If buying a whole computer wont solve my problem what will....I have gotten 4 different ideas including a scan that showed nothing malicious is in my computer. IM CONFUSED AND LOST AND FED UP!!!

I believe I may have spoken poorly.  What I meant was that if you have a virus, which I can not be sure of, (lousy grammar) a new PC will be just as susceptible as your current one.   Let me suggest one thing you may want to do, that is free and will eliminate one possible problem are.  You can download the Dell diagnostics for you PC and then run then.  This step will eliminate any possibility of hardware problems.  I see no reason to believe that what the PC was used for before you got it has any effect on its performance.

Ok hmmm...is all I have to do is type Dell Diagnostics into the address bar and hit enter? And I dont understand why a new computer wont solve my "stupid computer" syndrome. The guy told me that he left all the hardware (?) Id need to keep it clean.
