TOO SLOW TO START WINDOWS XP

Hi Maria,

I will try to help you. Let me know if there is anything you do not understand.

Please print my instructions so you can follow them easily.

1. You are running two anti-virus programs. that will slow down your computer because both are trying to scan at the same time. I suggest that you remove the Symantec product. Use Add/Remove Programs. After that use this to clean the rest: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

2. You are using a P2P program (Ares). Please remove that.

3. You do not have to remove Spyware Doctor, but please disable it for now so it does not interfere with the next scan.

To disable Spyware Doctor from running on your system startup:
* First, disable the OnGuard Tools. This way, when you exit Spyware Doctor, these tools won't stay resident in the background.
* Click the "Settings" button on the left side.
* Click the "Startup Settings" link.
* Uncheck "Run at Windows Startup".
* Click the "Apply" button.
Exit by a right-click on the "Spyware Doctor" icon in the system tray and choose "Exit".
[To enable Spyware Doctor when you are finished, open the program, Settings>Startup Settings> CHECK "Run at Windows Startup">APPLY
Exit. Reboot.]

To disable PCTools Browser Monitor: If you are running Internet Explorer, click Tools > Manage Add-ons. If PCTools Browser Monitor is on the list, click it & select Disable. You will need to restart your browser after making the change.

4. Next, please download to your desktop Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Make sure that everything is checked,
  Click Remove Selected.
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Notes)
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Copy and paste the entire report into your next reply. Also include a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process; if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

This are what I do
1. Add/remove  - OK, but when got the link for the rest I didn't know wich version I had because i don't have the CD,
    someone installed for me. I remove with 2004/2005 and 2006 after. I hope this work for remove completly
2. Removed ARES. ¿¿??  Whats mean P2P??? My daugther uses ARES to download songs. Is it not recommended???
3. OnGuard tools  desactived, but I didn't find in Settings the option "Startup Settings". It was a link named "General Settings" and
    "Run Scan on Windows Startup"  I unchecked this.
    There is no PC Tools monitor in Add ons.
    I restart the laptop but Spydoctor is still there when I open Add/Remove programs. How can I really disable??

2. Then select the items you wish to clean up. In the Windows Tab:

• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.

• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose. In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.

• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

3. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.

4. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.

5. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.

6. Click "exit" when done. REBOOT.

After all that, please let me know how things are running.

I will give you instructions for updating your Java. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities (problems) that malware can use to infect your system.

It takes some time for the icons in my desktop to appear the picture. First, it appears a white square with the name, then after some time it appears the picture that is supose to appear.

Our biggest problem was when we were on YouTube and Windows Messenger.

Do you think that is enough the AVG to protect my computer..? Is it neccesary to activate the Spy Doctor..?

I will be waiting for the instructions to update my Java.

You can run Spy Doctor when we are completely finished with all cleaning, and see if it slows your computer down. If it does, disable it and use it just whenever you want to run a scan.

Download -- to your Desktop -- JavaRa.Zip from either of these two sites:

• Unzip the download. This will create a new Folder, JavaRa on your Desktop.
• Double click this new Folder to open it, and double click the file within: JavaRa to execute the program.
• Click the button: Remove Older Versions.
• Agree to the cleanup operation by clicking Yes. After a moment, a notice will appear that a log file has been produced. Click OK. Close the Notepad view that opens.
• Click the button: Other Tasks.
• Choose these options:
• Remove Useless JRE Files
  Remove Startup Entry
  Remove JavaRa Logfile
  
• Click Go. When it finishes, click OK to close the panel, and then Exit the program.
• Delete the download, and the unzipped folder and all contents.
• Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
• Download Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13.
• Select Windows Offline Installation > SAVE it to your desktop, do not RUN it yet.
• When the download is complete, close all browser windows and double-click on the saved file to install the update. Be patient: It may take five (5) minutes or more for the installation to complete.
• If the installation gives you the option to install a toolbar UNCHECK the option if you don't want it .

Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

After all that, please post a fresh HijackThis log. Is your computer running better now?

Please boot into Safemode like this:

Turn on the computer.
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

Wait for some drivers to load. It will take a few minutes. Just sit back and let the computer take its time starting. Your Desktop will look odd, but that's ok.

When Windows loads. Look for the Hijackthis icon and click on it to open Hijackthis.

While in safemode, run a scan with HijackThis and place a checkmark next to this;

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsoemon.exe

Close all other windows and click "Fix Checked". Close Hijackthis.

Delete this folder if it still exists:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWEBSEARCH <--folder

 

Reboot normally.

Back in normal mode run HijackThis again and save the log,

Click on the Update tab.  Click the Check for Updates. Run a scan.

There was a recent update  for Java -- Update  14, so it would be good if you update again.

• Go to  the same page as before: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
• Download Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14 (I think it is the second one on the list.).
• Select Windows Offline Installation > SAVE it to your desktop, do not RUN it yet.
• When the download is complete, close all browser windows and double-click on the saved file to install the update. Be patient: It may take five (5) minutes or more for the installation to complete.

Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

If everything is still running well....

Please flush the XP System Restore Points: (Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.

On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.

Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

If you have installed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as part of your cleaning procedures, keep it updated and use it to scan every so often for malware, or upgrade to the paid version for realtime scanning and auto updating.

The following suggestions are general prevention and are not customized for your computer. You may have already taken some of these steps, and depending on your current security, you may not need to implement all of these:

1. Visit Microsoft Update: Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS. Microsoft's widows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date.

3.You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.

4. Do not use file sharing. Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple. File sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities.

5. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the following Rogue/Suspect Spyware Lists. http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm http://www.malwarebytes.org/database.php

6. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/ ** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar that is checked by default for the Standard version, or download the toolbar-free versions (Slim or Basic) when given the option for those.

7. Practice Safe Surfing with with TrendProtect by Trend Micro. This is not compatible with Firefox 3.0 yet. TrendProtect is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. TrendProtect also adds a new button to your browser's toolbar area. The icon and color of the button changes to indicate whether the page currently open is safe, unsafe, trusted, or unrated, or whether it contains unwanted content. The following color codes are used by TrendProtect to indicate the safety of each site.

• Red for Warning
• Yellow for Use Caution
• Green for Safe
• Grey for Unknown

Alternatively, Web Of Trust is a similar add-on that can also be used for Internet Explorer.  It uses colored alerts to warn about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware, or send spam. There is a Web Of Trust version for Firefox as well.

8. You might consider installing SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
It will:
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
