My initial reply was only Step One in troubleshooting and explaining what you suspected might be a spyware issue. It appears that you were able to resolve the problem by yourself, therefore I am deleting my post.

It appears that the culprit is one of the many adverts that appears on the home page of this financial site. This ad has downloaded ok this morning and the problem has disappeared for now. When not working, I can see where the ad should be, part of a message saying "Navigation cancelled". I have loaded Firefox and this allows me to stay on the site and see this part message, whereas IE7 takes me off the page almost immediately.
