If you are running any immunization security, that can prevent complete removal because such programs can lock your registry to not only prevent the addition of bad changes, but also prevent good changes.
1. First, try removing the Trojan by running Defender in SAFEMODE.
2. If that does not help, try an online scan at one of these:
* Eset
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Disable the protection of your resident anti-virus after installing the active X control. Make sure your resident anti-virus is still disabled when Eset actually starts scanning.
* F-Secure:
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml
Two options after that:
3. If that doesn't work, and you still want to try System Restore:
Before you install any new Windows Updates, try doing a System Restore going back to before you had the trojan and see if that works. Then install your Windows Updates.
4. Finally, if all the above attempts do not work, or if you do not want to do a System Restore, please post on the HijackThis Board here: http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board?board.id=si_hijack
to start your own thread requesting assistance. There are additional instructions at the top of that board.
