Almost forgot.  If you have problems with your desktop then:

Start, Run, regedit, OK to bring up the regedit program.
find HKey_Current_User->Software ->Microsoft->Windows->CurrentVersion>policies (Hit the + sign in front of each Key as you find them. That will open up the subkeys.)
Under Policies is usually an entry named System. If you find it highlight it and press the Delete key. Then OK. Close the program and reboot.
Start, Control Panel, Display (Properties). This should bring up Display Properties/Background. Change the wallpaper to something else and Apply. You may also need to select Web and uncheck the box where it says View My Active Desktop as a web page. OK

Get a copy of winsockxpfix.exe before you do anything. This is just a safety
item in case you can't get on the internet afterwards. You don't run it until
 afterwards and then only if you can't get back on the internet.
You just run it and things should work OK after it reboots your system.

http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

Get AboutBuster from:

http://www.besttechie.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=1488

Unpack it and make sure it runs and get the updates but don't let it fix anything yet.

Get DelDomain.inf from:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm  and then right click on it and Install.

Download the Hoster from:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip%20

Unpack to your desktop and run it.

Also download and install ccleaner.exe from http://www.ccleaner.com. Don't let
it clean anything yet.

Now get Pocket Killbox

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

and unpack it to your desktop.

Shutdown and Restart and Boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.

Wait 60 seconds and repeat the scan. Did any of the above come back? IF so
leave HijackThis up and right click on the clock and select Task Manager. Then
Processes. Find Explorer.exe, right click on it and select End Process. The
desktop will disappear but HijackThis should still be there. IF you don't see
it switch to Applications in Task Manager and highlight it there then press
Switch To or just double click on it. Check and Fix Checked the above again.
Restart Explorer by Task Manager, File, New Task(Run), explorer.exe, OK.

Run Killbox and in the box where it says Full Path of file to delete, Type or paste:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE, check delete on reboot and press the red button but don't let it reboot yet.
repeat for C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE -again do not let it reboot.

Run AboutBuster and let it Fix everything.  Then run it again.

Run ccleaner.exe, uncheck everything on the first page except the two entries
with Temporary and then Run Cleaner.

Reboot into regular mode and install deldomain.inf and run hoster
just to make sure.  Wouldn't hurt to also install Spyware Blaster
and IE-SPYADS from the links on the same page.  Also get
Spybot Search and Destroy from:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/
and let it immunize your system.  That will put a list of nasty sites in your hosts file
but they will all point to 127.0.0.1 so you can't accidentally go to them.

Run aboutBuster one more time.

Run another HijackThis log and post it as a reply. Let's
see how we did.

Almost there.

 Make sure you have a copy of Killbox  on your desktop.

Boot into Safe Mode (F8) as before.

Start Killbox and let it sit there.

Now:

  1. Click Start > Run.
  2. Type regedit

    Then click OK.

Right click on the clock and select Task Manager then Processes.  Find Explorer.exe, Highlight it and End Process.  Ignore the warning.  This should make your desktop disappear.  If you see any of these files in the process list then End them too.

explorer32dbg.exe

SMSSU.EXE

Tmntsrv32.EXE

iexplorer.exe

iexplore_dbg.exe

iexplore.exe

Switch back to regedit.  If you don't see it then in Task manager select Applications then highlight regedit and press Switch To.

  1. Navigate to :

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

               CLSID

                 {60371670-81B9-4d06-9C42-4DEC1AABE62B}

Select the above line ({60371670-81B9-4d06-9C42-4DEC1AABE62B}) and press Delete.  OK.

Repeat for:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

   TypeLib

       {4947DDCC-D549-4D0B-9685-AA58B20E9642}  <== Delete this

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

   Interface

      {0B6EF17E-18E5-4449-86EA-64C82D596EAE}  <== Delete This

  1. Navigate to the subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

      Software

         Microsoft

            Windows

                CurrentVersion

                    Run  <== Select but do not delete.

  1. In the right pane, delete the values:

    "SMSSU" = "%System%\SMSSU.EXE"
    "Tmntsrv32" = "%System%\Tmntsrv32.EXE"

  2. Navigate to the subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

  SOFTWARE

     Microsoft

        Windows NT

          CurrentVersion

             Image File Execution Options

                explorer.exe  <==Select but do not delete.

  1. In the right pane, delete the value:

    "Debugger" = "%Windir%\explorer32dbg.exe"

  2. Navigate to the subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

  SOFTWARE

     Microsoft

        Windows NT

            CurrentVersion

                 Image File Execution Options

                         iexplorer.exe

  1. In the right pane, delete the value:

    "Debugger" = "%Windir%\iexplore_dbg.exe"

  2. Exit the Registry Editor

(above borrowed from Symantec at:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.startpage.o.html  )

Go back to Task Manager (should be a little box at the bottom of your screen) and Switch To:  Killbox.

Then have it delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE

C:\Windows\iexplore_dbg.exe
C:\Windows\explorer32dbg.exe

By typing or pasting each of the above lines in the box where it says Full Path of File to Delete and then press the Red button and repeat for the next line.

Go back to Task Manager and File, New Task (Run) and type in explorer then OK.  This should bring back your desktop.

Shutdown and boot into normal mode and run a new HijackTHis log and post it as a Reply.

Sorry for the delay.  I got interrupted as I was reading your post and forgot where I was.

These two lines still show up in the scan but they are not running.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SMSSU] C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tmntsrv32] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE

Try using HijackThis to Check/Fix Checked them.  Rescan and if they are still there then see if Killbox can delete them.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE

 If it says they are not there then it's just a registry entry that is stuck.  Run regedit as before and find:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

look in the right pane for these:

"SMSSU" = "%System%\SMSSU.EXE"
"Tmntsrv32" = "%System%\Tmntsrv32.EXE"

and try to delete them.  Does it let you?

Log looks pretty good.  You do have one  dead entry:

O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! Companion - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\companion\Installs\cpn\ycomp5_5_7_0.dll (file missing)
Somewhere along the way the file was deleted.  If you liked the toolbar you might want to redownload it or if you never used it just check and Fix Checked.

Is the PC running OK now?
