Trojan-Spy.Win32@mx

Hi, I've been trying for the last two days to get rid of this virus thing. I looked at other postings that had this problem and tried the methods posted to remove the virus, but got no results. I don't know if this is the same as the other cases, but this virus has the system alert that says it has the virus, a similar warning screen that pops up now and then, pornographic popups from adult friend finder, and it changed my homepage for internet explorer to http://safeiepage.com/ and a warning for W32.Myzor.FK@yf. I have run McAffee On-Access virus scan, spybot s&d, smitfraud, ad-aware se, stinger, avg, ccleaner, vundofix, look2me-destroyer, and virtumundobegone. Here is the HijackThis report. Please help me. It doesn't seem to be doing any serious damage, seeing as I'm using the infected computer to send this. It just bothers me when this machine does things without my consent. Thank you in advance.

Welcome :) We'll try our best to see if we can clean things up for you. Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

First of all, as long as you already have AVG AS, please download the latest update fi you have not already done so.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press " Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report along with all others into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Go back to the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option ONLY #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Let the tool run again.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display.
Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.
Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin
______________________________

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders.
Reboot into Safemode.
  • While in Safe Mode, launch your AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG AS will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG AS and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

Please go to your Hijackthis here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Ben.DJ5BL661\Desktop\spyware and virus removal\ HijackThis1991.exe
and rename HijackThis1991.exe to analyzer.exe

In your next reply please include:

1. The report from SmitfraudFix found here: C:\rapport.txt
2. The report from AVG AS
3. A fresh analyser(HijackThis) log

You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

There seems to be a problem with SmitfraudFix. Before I contact the tool's developer, please tell me when you downloaded SmitfraudFix, and where you downloaded it from. I assume it was today as I posted the instructions earlier and gave you the link. I asked you to print the instructions so you could follow them exactly, so I'm sure you followed them. For some reason, you ended up with a very old version. I will need to research the problem before we proceed any further.

October 30th, 2006 14:00

I had a virus problem similar to this about 9 months ago. That's when I downloaded Smitfraud. I guess I'll download it again and repeat the last posting.

October 30th, 2006 14:00

Alright, here's where I downloaded it from.

http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip

I'll install it now and repeat the procedure.

Yes, it helps to follow instructions exactly and use updated tools. Malware changes each day, so the tools change as well.

Weatherbug and MyWebSearch are optional, so if you are happy with them, we you may as well keep them.

Please run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile:
Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
Please make sure the following are checked:
-- Downloaded Program Files
-- Temporary Internet Files
-- Recycle Bin
-- Temporary Files
Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.

Following that, please post a fresh Hijackthis log for final review and let me know how things are running. Thanks. :)

Oh, and what is the mywebsearch thingy? I don't really remember installing it... Should I get rid of it, or just leave it alone?

I didn't notice it at first, but everything appeared to be fixed after running the updated smitfraud. I still did the disk clean up for both users, and updated java. Everything looks great! Even my ie homepage is better! Thanks a lot! I guess I should update my antivirus and spyware stuff a little more often. But anyway, thanks for helping me out. I really appreciate it.

MyWebsearch is Optional/Open to Debate. Info here: http://www.castlecops.com/tk4409-My_Web_Search_Bar_BHO.html

If you want to remove it, go to Add/Remove and uninstall it.

Delete the MyWebSearch folder here:
C:\Program Files\ MyWebSearchWB

Run HijackThis and fix this entry:
O2 - BHO: My Web Search Bar BHO - {8EAB99C1-F9EC-4b64-A4BA-D9BCAE8779C2} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB\bar\1.bin\W6BAR.DLL

Close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix Checked".

Close Hijackthis and reboot.

After something like this it is a good idea to purge the Restore Points and start fresh.
If everything is running well....
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

You may have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
b. SpywareGuard:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial50.html
Periodically check for updates in both programs.

4. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (Zone Labs) http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?lid=home_freedownloads
Sunbelt Kerio has a free version: http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html

5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/

6. Install spyware detection and removal programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.

a. Ad-aware: http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

b. SpyBot S&D: http://safer-networking.org/en/news/2005-05-31.html

I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Ad-aware frequently.

If you have recently installed AVG Anti-Spyware, it is a free trial product for 30 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update it using the *update* button

7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List.
Here is the link:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

8. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/
** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbr.

9. If you use Adobe Reader it may need to be updated to be sure that you have a more secure version. If you are using a version prior to v. 6.05, you should update to 6.05, preferably version 7.08. It would be best to remove prior versions before updating to a new version.
Info here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows
If you need additional assistance, the Adobe forums are here: http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/main.html

10. Make sure you are using the most updated version of Java. The most updated version is jre-1_5_0_09.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
