unable to remove files with *.tmp extention

Hey
I have Dell computer and windows XP installed on it. There is a folder "temp" nested in the "WIndows" folder; The size of this folder is enormously big: I have more than 4.000 files in there , all172 kb and all have tmp extension.  Any attempts to remove any of these files failed.
I am getting a message: "the file can not be read from the source" . Meanwhile, I am running out oif space on my hard drive: this temp folder is taking up all the space and number of files increases daily. I already removed and archived everything I could. PLease, help me if you can.
better- -to e-mail me :
Thanks

Excellent suggestion to download CCleaner!
http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp )  No fuss.. no muss. LOL
(You won't even have to bother reading what I suggested)

(If you have no interest in the Yahoo Toolbar, make sure you either download the version without it, or if you d/l the Standard Build, make sure to uncheck the box offering it..prior to installation. Look for it.  You'll see it!)

Good idea Royhud.. now why didn't I think of that!!??  LOL  Don't know what I'd do without it.  (Probably delete things on my own.. as I always had.  CCleaner forced me to be lazy! :smileysad: )

You could also download CCleaner from CNET.com
http://www.download.com/CCleaner/3000-2144_4-10465908.html?tag=lst-0-1
It can clean up many other things as well. Hope this helps.

Tanyushka..

A suggestion first..  I have found that posting your email address in a public forum, can open you up to various problems - spam being only one of them.  Your choice.. only a suggestion.

I could explain about that folder and what's in it, but it's explained quite thoroughly here .  Scroll down to where he deals with the .tmp files you're asking about.  You couldn't ask for anything more basic and detailed.   Also, you might also want to read a couple more posts below that, where someone asks if it's okay to delete all the .tmp files.  (Actually.. the entire thread is interesting.. if you have the time.)

I hope this helps..
