WinPatrol 2012 released

Welcome to version WinPatrol 24.0.2012 It’s been a while but I’m pleased to finally release a brand new version of WinPatrol to all our friends and fans. Over the past year malware has gotten very clever but what’s worse is that legitimate programs have become more controlling and obnoxious.

Some of the most popular applications have decided they know what’s best for you and try to take control of simple functions on your computer. While I’ve continued to work keeping your computer safe from malware I’ve spent as much time giving you control over what legitimate programs can do. If you notice your computer is slow it may not be malware. In many cases it will be a popular program that thinks it needs to run all the time just in case you need to use it.

NEW with WinPatrol 2012 verson 24.0:

Thanks Joe. That is a good news. I been waiting for WP 2012 forever. Still I am going to wait until tomorrow to try it out, and watch the Forum for news. Hope that this version does " Kill " some progs, the Explorer gadget works, and the new cookie filter does indeed recognize the new cookie codes.

Regards.

for AVG users who upgrade to WinPatrol 2012, AVG is detecting (F/P) WinPatrol as a virus:

http://billpstudios.blogspot.com/2011/12/avg-reports-winpatrol-2012-as-virus.html

EDIT:   reply from AVG:

Dear Sir / Madam,

Thank you for your email.

Unfortunately, the previous virus database might have detected the mentioned virus in some legitimate applications. We can confirm that this was a false alarm. We will release a new virus update removing the false positive detection of the mentioned file. Please update your AVG as described in FAQ 3271:
http://www.avg.com/faq?num=3271

When the update is completed, AVG will automatically restore the falsely detected file from the AVG Virus Vault to its original location.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Hernan,

Yes, the new WinPatrol can indeed read/interpret the new cookie naming scheme --- it shows you both the "new" name, as well as what site it's for.

But NO, I am still NOT able to "kill" tasks (win XP SP3).

Hi David.

The conundrums of Windows and other programs :emotion-43:. I am glad I have my cookie filter working again, and furtunately my " Kill Task " is working; However, I´m still missing the Windows Explorer Plus Info. It gives " Access Denied " when trying to look for a file. I believe it was WP 19 the last version where it worked as it should do.

I already reported it to WP Forum.

Happy New Year.

Your kill task is working again?  hmmm...

More on cookies:

When I clicked on VIEW COOKIES, the PATH list stopped showing cookie paths somewhere in the mid O's [Letter O]... from that point on it listed only the domain - Cookie names [leaving the path blank].

I don't know if that's a defect inherent upon reaching the O's... or perhaps there's a cookie counting system that gets exceeded in number???

I have reported both problems to BillP via email.

Yes, Version 19 was the last WP in which " Kill Task " worked well. As a matter of fact WP 19 was the last WP which everytinhg worked right. All trough version 20 did not worked, and neither " Windows Explorer WP PLUS info ", and then the new code for cookies came out and I had 3 WP features that were dead wait..

Something I have to say about " Kill Task ". If I kill a task that is showing in the taskbar ( Where the o'clock is ), the icon for that prog does not go away, but if I look for the prog task ( Ctrl+Alt+Del) in Windows Task managment, it is not there.

My cookie path is showing all of them from 0 to 9 to A to Z. :emotion-40:

I'm confused --- you wrote:  "Version 19 was the last WP in which " Kill Task " worked well".   So is kill task working for you again in the new WinPatrol 24.0.2012.x ?  Or not??

As for killing a program which has an icon showing in the system tray, I've found that often, the icon remains there... until I move my cursor over to it, at which point, the system tray "refreshes" and that icon disappears.

I seem to recall BillP asserting that he may have to create two separate versions of WinPatrol in the future... one for 32-bit systems, and one for x64-bit systems... as trying to combine them into a single program seems not to work well (easily) any more.

Sorry about my syntax. Yes, it is working again in WP 2012.

EDIT: Let me take that back. I just tried it again in order to see if the icon would disappeared as you said above, and guess what ? the three progs I tried out were not killed. :emotion-12: I do not understand. The first thing I tried out last night and it worked. Now it doesn't. Disappoiment.
