i recently connected to a dsl line thru verizon....since then i receive millions of pop-ups and ads....so, i downloaded mcafee's complete package.  no sooner than the download finished, the screen started to go nuts, pop-ups all over...at one point there were 33 programs running....then suddenly the screen just turned completely upside down....i've shut down and restart, killed from the tower...nothing gets it rightside up again....now getting errors that there is a Parasite on my computer.....

ANY HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Are you really sure you want the users to do this Chris? You are removing the startup entries to many needed programs - such as the AV program - with no method of restoring those startup listings.

heyjude3520,

(I) Boot into Safe mode
* Restart the computer
* At the first beep (older systems) or on the blue Dell screen (new systems), tap the F8 key (do not hold it down)
* At some point, the Advanced Options menu will appear
* Scroll to and select Safe Mode [Press the Enter Key]
* Select the first or only operating system [Press the Enter Key]

(II) Clear all Internet Explorer trash
* Click Start- (Settings)- Control Panel
* Look to the left. If listed, click "Switch to Classic View"
* Click Internet Options
* Click Delete Cookies
* Click OK
* Click Delete Files
* Insert a check to Delete all offline content
* Click OK
* Click Clear History
* Click Yes
* Click OK to close the window

(III) Clear the Start Up group
* Right click the Start button
* Left click Open
* Double click Programs
* Double click Startup (Everything you see in the start up folder is actually running all the time, which just takes away from your system resources)
* Move ALL the icons in the Startup folder to the desktop or a newly created folder on the desktop. Here is how too move the icons:
- Right click the icon [hold the right button down]
- Drag the icon [while holding the right button down] out of the Start Up box
- Let go on the desktop or in a folder on the desktop
- Left click "Move Here"
* After you have moved all the icons out of the Start Up folder, close all the boxes

(IV) Clear the Registry Run folders
* Click Start- Run
* Type regedit
* Click OK
* Click the + left of the following:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
SOFTWARE
MICROSOFT
WINDOWS
CURRENT VERSION
* Click the Run folder
Write down what is listed on the right

* Click the + left of the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
MICROSOFT
WINDOWS
CURRENT VERSION
* Click the Run folder
Write down what is listed on the right
* Close the registry editor

(V) Remove any unknown programs
**NOTE if your unsure of what to remove, just get to section V and post back the list of all the programs in add/remove. We can then help decide what is spyware.

* Click Start- (Settings)- Control Panel
* Look to the left. If listed, click "Switch to Classic View"
* Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon
* Look to the left. If listed, click the Change or Remove Programs button. A listing of all installed programs should be available
* Select the unknown application (Internet Optimizer, Gator, etc..) you want removed and then click the Change/Remove button
* The InstallShield Wizard dialog box, select the Remove check box
* Click Next
* If you get a window for "Remove Share Component", click "Yes to All"
* If you get a window for "Remove Share File", click "Yes to All"
* Click Yes
* When finished, close all boxes

List for us everything you found in both the RUN folders and in add/remove programs. We can tell you what they are.

Whoaaaaaa here..listen up..Chris did NOT say highlight and delete..he said WRITE DOWN...the remove programs is step V which as he directs is done in the add/remove ... not registry ...

From my experience the best way to do the instructed repairs from the DELL MODERATORS is to print out a copy of the instructions and follow them CAREFULLY and do not leave out any steps!!

Your screen is upside down cuz your video drivers have got corrupted.

To resolve this you need to reboot into safe mode and do a system restore or deleted the video drivers from the device manager and reboot into normal mode and reinstall the video drivers from the dell dim resource cd.

Call up delltech if you are not comfortable doing it .

About the popups you would need to post a hijackthis log

You are correct IRT this posting. My apologies to Chris.

However, it appears the pinned post at the top of the board here still contains the instructions to "Highlight and delete all programs except SystemTray and LoadPowerProfile" for both the HKLM and HKCU run locations.

Double-check the last instruction Chris left, about posting back here with what you wrote down from the registry RUN entries and any unknown programs in the Add/Remove Programs section.

Did your system start acting up while you were still in Safe Mode?

just to double-check you were doing it properly, you need to press/hold all 3 keys simultaneously...

here are a list of key-combinations that usually work... perhaps one of the others can help you:

Ctrl + Alt + Left Arrow:     Rotate display 90 degrees Left
Ctrl + Alt + Right Arrow:    Rotate display 90 degrees Right
Ctrl + Alt + Down Arrow:    Rotate display 180 degrees (Upside down)
Ctrl + Alt + Up Arrow:       Rotate display to regular mode

Those keys work on a laptop but not always on a desktop.  Try this:

Right click your desktop, select Properties -> Settings -> Advanced.  There should be a tab for your graphics card.  Check in there and see if there's an option to rotate your screen.
