Virtual Memory // Slow system // funny behavior
I'm trying to "continue" my understanding of my system. I've run HIJACK this, SPYBOT, and have an installed SPYWARE PROGRAM (Spysweeper) on my system, Norton Anti-Virus 2003 Professional, and also have run CWShredder.
Interesting things....
1) My initital total Applications are around 40
2) My virtual memory requirements sooner or later go up to the max, for apparently no reason. My NORTON (NAVAPSVC.exe)
Running CW Shredder shows the system clean....
SPYBOT shows system clean
I'm confused as to what to do. I was hoping NOT TO HAVE TO REFORMAT the drive and re-load.
Is there anything else I need to check?
If I have to reload Windows and all of my applications....is there a way that I can move my files to the computer I'm writing this on and then transfer back in a quick way....of course only the data files and not the program files. Although there are some programs I'd like to handle in the same way (??)
I've been working on this for a few days running different programs (above) and still getting problems....VIRTUAL MEMORY, system won't allow me to "RESTART", COULDN'T RESET SETTINGS TO a previous date. ETC....
Is there some utility that can scan my system and tell me where it has problems?? Or am I dreaming??

Robert: without seeing your latest log I am going to venture an educated guess (since I saw you 4 weeks ago). *;-)
You still have the new variant of CWS...indicated by the HomeOldSP entry weeks ago. It seems to go away, but doesn't as there is an evil .dll lurking in the bowels.
But hey...there is a new fix:

Let me know if you get relief...kill the evil file in Safe Mode if you find it with the tool.

Last evening when I was re-booting the system. It said that the following file was corrupt or missing:
\system32\hal.dll
So I copied it off of my other computer and then saved it into the location stated above. Since the system "wouldn't allow me to shutdown normally", I had to turn off via the power switch.
Now when it tries to boot, I get the ...we apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did start successfully. I get the screen to Start Windows Normally or safe mode. If I choose safe mode it hangs up as it is loading the settings....if I go normal it just hangs up!!
Now after loading the hal.dll I am worse off...????
Is there a way to boot from a CD Emergency disk? How do I make one of those??
