Virtumonde and gadcom malware help?

Hi, last night I was hit with the same pro-scanner-online.com hijacker that a lot of people seem to have gotten.  I've spent hours trying to get rid of it myself, and at this point I've got free versions of AVG, Spybot S&D, PC Tools Spyware Doctor, Spyware Guard, SUPERAntiSpyware, and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and have run scans with all of them (including some while in Safe Mode).  I think I've got most of the problems cleared up, but I have still gotten one or two alerts from Spybot about gadcom.

Here's the latest scan results from HijackThis. I was wondering if someone could look through this and let me know if there's anything remaining that I should go in and remove manually with HijackThis?  I don't know enough to know what it is I'm seeing here.

Also, ever since I ran Windows in Safe Mode, even in normal mode the taskbar and start menu have been in that ugly old-style safe-mode form instead of the usual one for XP.  I've tried changing it under Properties but it seems to think it's still in XP mode.  Any ideas on how to fix this?

Welcome. Thank you for using Dell Community Forums.

I am reviewing your log. In the meantime, you can help me by addressing the following:

* Have you have posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you have disabled System Restore in an attempt to begin cleaning malware, please enable it now. We will flush System Restore when we are finished cleaning and we are sure that everything is running smoothly.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it. Definition of cracked software: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_cracking

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.  The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. There is a list here:    http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19241146/19367569.aspx#19367569

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* Have you already fixed entries using HijackThis? If so, please restore all the backups and then post another log.

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures. Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using. Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

* During the course of our cleanup please do not do any online work or surfing until we have verified that your system is clean.

* We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case. Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them.

* If your replies do not fit in one post while we are handling your issue, please reply to yourself until all text is submitted. It may take several posts.

I look forward to your reply so we can begin cleaning.

Instructions posted for this user are customized for this user only. The tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections. If you think you have similar problems, please post a HijackThis log at the top of this board to start a new forum topic.

Thank you.

- I posted pretty  much the exact same topic on the Tech Support Guy forums at around the same time.  There are no responses as of yet.  http://forums.techguy.org/malware-removal-hijackthis-logs/775950-virtumonde-gadcom-malware-help.html#post6313264

- I have not disabled System Restore.

- no cracked or P2P

- This computer is mine.

- I have not attempted to fix anything using HijackThis, I have only scanned.

- Should I close or remove any of the scanners I have been using thus far in the process of trying to solve this?

Thanks!

Right click the running icon of Spybot's TeaTimer, and choose Exit SpyBot S&D - Resident'
While both Teatimer and SpyBot are closed:
Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer from restoring them upon reactivation).
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
If you are using Firefox right click the above link and choose ‘Save As’.
Save it to your desktop.
Save it as resetteatimer.bat

  • 1) Run Spybot-S&D
  • 2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
  • 3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • 4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
  • 5) Restart your computer.

Double click on resetteatimer.bat to run it, and wait for it to finish.

Since it will not be needed again, delete ResetTeaTimer.bat after you run it.
When we are COMPLETELY finished with ALL your fixes,  you can turn Teatimer back on again via SpyBot's tools resident page.

  • Right-click on the SG icon in your system tray and SpywareGuard should open.
  • Click "Options" and then uncheck these options under the "General" tab:
  • Enable Real-Time Scanning
  • Enable Download Protection
  • Enable Browser Hijack Protection
  • Click "Save Settings"

** When we have completed all of your fixes, please re-enable these settings.

Please launch Hijackthis and place a checkmark next to the following:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [gadcom] "C:\Documents and Settings\zen\Application Data\gadcom\gadcom.exe"

Close all other windows and click "Fix Checked". Close Hijackthis.

Delete the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\zen\Application Data\gadcom <--folder

Reboot.

Please update your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Run a scan and please post that log along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Do not enable TeaTimer of SpywareGuard yet.

All completed except for deleting C:\Documents and Settings\zen\Application Data\gadcom as it could not be found.  I opened C:\Documents and Settings\zen\Application Data but did not see gadcom among the folders there, and when I entered C:\Documents and Settings\zen\Application Data\gadcom into Start -> Run, it said it could not be found.  Is it hidden, or already deleted?

That may have been removed on one of the reboots. The registry entry is gone, so you did a good job. :emotion-1:

Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to this one:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {73C17C6B-A60C-4477-A63B-42678B5422A6} - (no file)

Close all other windows and click "Fix Checked". Close HijackThis.

You have Viewpoint installed. Viewpoint developed a behavioral targeting product in 2006. Viewpoint is associated with a program called viewmgr.exe and the ViewPoint Media Player.
Viewpoint is bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Adobe Atmosphere, Netscape 7, etc and sometimes not mentioned in the license agreement. Hardware manufacturers pre-install some of these applications.
ViewPoint Toolbar will redirect your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers. The Viewpoint Toolbar is listed is also classified as a threat in the CounterSpy Threat Library because it hijacks your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers.
Viewpoint Manager is a media player often bundled with AIM software. Viewpoint Manager is a useless add on.
Because Viewpoint's software will track your web surfing and tailor advertisements based on the web pages you are visiting, I suggest you remove the program.
** Note: Removing Viewpoint Media Player may cause the program that bundled it to not function as intended. For AOL and AIM it is needed to use their 3D icons known as Super Buddies and for customized themes, etc.
If you wish to remove Viewpoint, end process on ViewManager in Task Manager.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
  • Viewpoint Experience Technology

Then remove the Viewpoint folder in your Program Files.

Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile: Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup" Please make sure only the following are checked:

-- Downloaded Program Files

-- Temporary Internet Files

-- Recycle Bin

-- Temporary Files

Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

REBOOT.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. It is possible that you may be running Java code in your applications that absolutely require a specific version of the JRE to run. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11 .
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • NOTE: As always during installations, beware of any pre-checked option to install the MSN/Microsoft's Live Search Toolbar.
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each of the Java versions.
    Close Add/Remove.

  • * In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java =this folder. Delete any subfolders.
    * Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\ JavaVM =this folder, if found!
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how things are running.

It seems to be running much better, thank you!  Both reboots went smoothly (as opposed to this morning, when it would freeze on two out of three) and I tested just now putting the computer in sleep mode and it resumed Windows normally no problem (which again, this morning, it froze every time).

That's good news!

If everything is running well....

To flush the XP System Restore Points: (Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.

On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.

Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

If you have installed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as part of your cleaning procedures, keep it updated and use it to scan every so often for malware, or upgrade to the paid version for realtime scanning and auto updating.

The following suggestions are general prevention and are not customized for your computer. You may have already taken some of these steps, and depending on your current security, you may not need to implement all of these:

1. Visit Microsoft Update: Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS. Microsoft's widows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date. Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (by Checkpoint) has a free version http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?lid=home_freedownloads

3.You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

4. Do not use file sharing. Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple. File sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities.

5. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the following Rogue/Suspect Spyware Lists. http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm http://www.malwarebytes.org/database.php

6. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/ ** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar that is checked by default for the Standard version, or download the toolbar-free versions (Slim or Basic) when given the option for those.

7. Practice Safe Surfing with with TrendProtect by Trend Micro. This is not compatible with Firefox 3.0 yet. TrendProtect is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. TrendProtect also adds a new button to your browser's toolbar area. The icon and color of the button changes to indicate whether the page currently open is safe, unsafe, trusted, or unrated, or whether it contains unwanted content. The following color codes are used by TrendProtect to indicate the safety of each site.

  • Red for Warning
  • Yellow for Use Caution
  • Green for Safe
  • Grey for Unknown

8. You might consider installing SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
It will:
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
Tutorial here:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
Periodically check for updates

9. Here are some helpful articles:

AVG is monitoring your system for spyware. You have Super Anti-Spyware running as well. That's three!
If I were you, I'd remove Spyware Doctor and set SAS to run on-demand rather than at Startup.

Thank you so much for all your help.  I've been testing it out running things as I normally do, and the computer seems to almost perfect.  The only problem I've found is that for most reboots, Windows still freezes during start-up (this last reboot took 7 tries before it managed to complete it), although it still comes out of sleep mode just fine.  I'm wondering if the problem is that it's trying to run too many programs on start-up, what with all the new protection software I've installed in the process of getting rid of the malware.  It certainly seems like it's a problem of too many programs, as it usually freezes somewhere in the process of loading all the auto-startup programs in the system tray.  Which programs would you recommend removing as redundant or not as good as the others (I was thinking PC Tools Spyware Doctor, for one), and/or are there any other solutions I can implement that don't involve removing programs?

Hi, i'm not sure whether i should be bumping this thread or not, so if not i apologise.

I seem to have picked up the Vundo and gadcom strain. I have AVG and Adaware free, and while they did pick the virus up, it always reappears on reboot.I have tried various other patches and nothings worked thus far.

Both my computers have been affected, running much slower and IE is a nightmare. Everything opens in a new window and goes to some fake virus protector or ad site.

I have not disabled system restore, have no cracked software of P2p. It is my computer and i did remove the 02 (BHO) number on hijack this, but it just reappeared on reboot.

Please help me if you can as nothing seems to be helping at all. Here is my log:
