Virus Burst

Question

I have taken the following steps to try to resolve this problem.    Ran the McAfee Stinger utility unistalled McAfee, installed Verizon Security Suite Directed to Major Geeks website by Dell forum Ran Ccleaner on all log ins and admin Ran Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool as above Ran Spybot Search and Destroy as above Ran Microsoft Windows Defender as above Ran Hijack This and am inserting logs run on one user.  Please advise if all three users are required. Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Select Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'
Right click on ewido in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
Press "OK".
In Services, click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard.
When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the Ewido Full database installer from here.
Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet. We will shortly.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press " Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

For a reason unknown to me, my view of your answer on this infected computer shows all the formatting characters, so it is difficult to read. I opened the message on my laptop, and it was fine. Here is the report requested. I previously uninstalled early on in the process, but I see it showed up again. Do you have to uninstall for each user? I didn't think so.

Good thing you have that laptop. We'll keep cleaning.
In IE did you have "View Source" selected on the infected computer? Or in firefox it would be "Page Source".

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press " Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report along with all others into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : Running option #2 on a non-infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:

Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
Click OK.

Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display.
Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.
Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders.

While in Safe Mode, launch ewido anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close Ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

In your next reply please include:

1. The report from SmitfraudFix found here: C:\rapport.txt
2. The report from ewido
3. A fresh HijackThis log

You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

The blinking icon is gone! Thank you PTL and dell. I am inserting the requested logs. I am embarrassed to say that I mistakenly ran smitfraudfix twice, so the original log was overwritten. I know that the previously referenced icodec file was deleted as well as several files with a 1024 in them, which mcafee online scan found on the first day and I did multiple searches for since.

Thanks again. I hope this is it for virus burst.

Edit: I guess we posted at the same time. Explain what you mean by "navigation bar". One of the things that was part of the infection was a toolbar.

For your address bar problem:
1. Start Internet Explorer, click View and then point to Toolbars.
2. If there is not a check mark next to Address Bar, click Address Bar to place the check mark. If there is a check mark next to Address Bar, click Address Bar to remove the check mark, and then click Address Bar to place the check mark.
3. If the Address bar is in the upper right corner and not available, right-click Address, and then click Lock the Toolbar to remove the check mark.
4. Click Address, and then drag the Address bar where you want it.

Reboot.

Please run Disk Cleanup.
Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile:
Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
Please make sure the following are checked:

-- Temporary Internet Files
-- Recycle Bin
-- Temporary Files
Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Have you run Error Checker and Defrag lately? That may help to speed things up.

I notice that you are using Defender as well as Ad-watch. That may be part of your resource problem. Ad-watch has given some users a resource issues. You might want to disable that and see if you notice an improvement.

When everything is running smoothly, it would be a good idea to purge the Restore Points and start fresh.
If everything is running well....
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

You may have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs:

6. Install spyware detection and removal programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.

I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Ad-aware frequently.

If you have recently installed Ewido, it is a free trial product for 30 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button

7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List.

8. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/

9. If you use Adobe Reader it may need to be updated to be sure that you have a more secure version. If you are using a version prior to v. 6.05, you should update to 6.05, preferably version 7.08. It would be best to remove prior versions before updating to a new version.

10. Make sure you are using the most updated version of Java. The most updated version is jre-1_5_0_08.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

I have the virusburst virus on my Dell XPS PC and also the W32.Myzor.FK@yf one too. I have been directed to follow the instructions from bugbatter. I have done his first instructions and hre is the log I get from rapport.
