Who is your ISP? What computer model and version of Windows? Do you know what modem is installed? When the sound did work, did it come from inside the tower or from the system speakers?

Not really sure, but i'll take a quick guess. If your modem is working ok, allowing you to dial out to your ISP, then you might check the properties for the modem. There is a software option for most modems that allow the modem speaker to either be off all the time, on only after connecting, or on all the time. There should also be a volume level in the properties as well. If you cannot dial out properly, look at the modem in the device manager to see if there is an 'x' or '!' next to it. If so, or if all else fails, reload the driver and any auto-setup software for the modem card.

The ISP matters because some ISP's (AOL is the prime example) install diallers of their own and don't use the one built into Windows.

Assuming your ISP uses the dialler built into Windows, you should be able to enable the modem speaker this way:

Open Control Panel and double click on Phone and Modem Options. Then open the Modem tab. Be sure your modem is highlighted, then click on Properties. Open the Advanced tab. Under Extra Settings, add the init string "ATM1" (without the quotes). OK your way out.

If you are using a ISP that uses it's own dialler, the same init string should work, but you'll have to figure out on your own where it goes.

Derf

Not sure the isp is relevant but anyways it is PlusNet.  Sound came from the modem not the speakers.  See my post for all other questions.

Thanks for your input but have already tried everything including reinstalling the drivers.  I installed the modem in my old computer and it is working fine - including sound - pity it's a dinosaur.  I guess my only option is to plough the forums but to date I have not found a similar problem.  Hours of endless fun.

Problem fixed - thanks Derf.  A small but significant victory over an annoying little problem.  "cybertechhelp" has a good explanation (found it shortly after your suggestion).

Thanks again.

Good catch Derf! An A+ technician couldn't have answered it better (hey...that is me! >;->

Al...Sorry I missed all the fun and games researching this one...dial-up modems were once my pride and joy to know everything about them...now I have a box full of V.92s and other older modems...relics for the Smithsonian someday.
