EDIT:   This was being prepared simultaneously as you were posting your HJT log...

do you literally mean that Norton "stopped working" --- that is to say, "something" (malware) turned it off on you?   if so, HiJackThis would be the best way to proceed.   Since you already mentioned it, I'll assume you know what to do... but if not, please ask for details.   the current version is TrendMicro HiJackThis 2.0.2

but if instead, you meant your subscription expired and it's simply no longer up to date, then you need to obtain a replacement anti-virus as soon as possible.   three popular/free possibilities are Avira's Antivir, Atwil's Avast, or Grisoft's AVG.   Choose only one of these.   I can provide the links at your request.

Also, rather than NoAdware, I would suggest you try/use SuperAntiSpyware...
EDIT:  I see from your log you have SuperAntiSpyware...

I see you posted your HJT while I was replying.   a few points:

1) HJT logs must be posted in the HJT forum, not here in virus/spyware

2) you "chopped off" the opening few lines of your HJT log.   when you [re-]post in the HJT forum, please include the ENTIRE log.

3) i see a Vundo infection... there may or may not be other problems as well.

Sorry for posting it in the wrong place.  Norton stopped working by itself - not expired.  I'm on a different computer right now.  I'll update HijackThis tomorrow and post a new log (in the right place).  I do not know how to use HijackThis - I read somewhere that it would help detect problems.  I had AVG installed before I updated to Norton 2007.  I had to remove to install 2007.  Should I reinstall it?  I'll rescan the computer tomorrow using Super AntiSpyware and report back.

since you've re-posted your log in the HJT forum... and hopefully, the HJT experts there will get to it "soon"... I don't want to offer any suggestions that might be considered "interference".   it's very likely that, with a bit of perseverance, they can fix your problem . withOUT you having to reformat/reinstall.

I see you had the older HJT, version 1.99.... here's info on the latest version:

Download the latest version of Trend Micro's HiJackThis (HJT) [version 2.0.2]   installer   from

Save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the     HJTInstall.exe    file you just downloaded, and click on the   Install   button, to install HJT in the suggested/default folder,
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

( As part of the installation, a shortcut to the HJT   program  will be placed on your Desktop, and another shortcut in your START menu [for easy-access to using HJT in the future ---
you only need to run the  program  again, but not the  installer ] ).

After installation, HJT will automatically open and start running.
[If this is your   first time  running HJT, please read and accept the EULA (End-User License Agreement)]

Click on  Do a System Scan and Save a LogFile

This will automatically open NotePad

Copy the entire file from NotePad:  EDIT/SelectAll, EDIT/Copy

Then go to the forum dedicated for HiJack This logs (**NOT** back here), and  PASTE the results there:

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board?board.id=si_hijack

Be sure to include a detailed description of any problems/errors/warnings you are encountering.

Also, please indicate the steps you've already taken, if any, in terms of running anti-malware scanners or malware removal tools.

When you submit your HJT log, please make sure the box under your text which shows "Automatically convert carriage returns to HTML line breaks" is checked, or your log may not format correctly... it should consist of separate/readable lines, not one large "jumble".

Hopefully, one of the HJT experts will get to it as quickly as possible.

WARNING:  HiJack This is a VERY POWERFUL tool.  While it's  completely safe  for you to download, generate, and post your log (as described above), you should *NOT* attempt to do anything else (in particular, do NOT use it to delete/fix any entries) until you are advised to do so by a forum expert!!   Improper use of this tool can severely damage your system.

I did post the HijackThis log in the right place.  Crossposting, sorry.  It is under the same title "virus removal".  I'll post the edited version in that message - to make it easier for everyone.  Is there anything I can do in the meantime prior to posting the new log?  Any ideas on what may be causing the problem?  My dad has decided to reformat the hard drive and wipe it clean.  I want to use it as a last resort.  Is there any more information that you require about the problem?

the screensaver has a problem and needs to close and wants to send a message to microsoft???

what if you try a different screen saver (something other than my pictures) --- does that also generate the error?

again, let me state that now that you've posted in HJT, the best thing is for you to wait for a response there, and then follow their advice exactly as indicated.   it's very tempting to try a lot of things while you wait, hoping to get things done sooner, but that can actually complicate matters if you try the wrong things.

My screensaver is "my pictures screensaver".  Could the problem be affecting that?  Everytime the screensaver runs, I receive that message "...has a problem and needs to close.  Send error report/don't send".  I never send it - pointless.  I just wondered.

i see that BamaJim has replied to your HJT log in the HJT forum.    Your help is now entirely entrusted into his hands.   I strongly suggest that you follow his directions, and only his directions, exactly as he indicates, doing nothing less nor nothing more than he specifies.   please hold off on running any other scanners, or installing another a-v, unless/until he advises you to do so.

good luck.
