Where 'DSO Exploit' Come From?

Hey Guys!

Question:  Every single time I run the Spybot Search & Destroy, I get 5 entries for 'DSO Exploit' - where is that coming from?  Should I be concerned?  It appears on both computers.

Also, I am going to be switching from EarthLink DSL to SBC/Yahoo DSL.  I know the SBC/Yahoo software will have a built in tool bar as well as other stuff I don't want.  Do I simply run through all the necessary steps (confirming service, getting e-mail, etc) and then un-install all that stuff?  I removed all the EarthLink stuff a long time ago - I access the internet directly from IE.  And you guys helped un-install the Yahoo tool bar.  Somewhere in this forum I read about avoiding extraneous toolbars.

Thanks!  --V

The 'DSO exploit' report is a bug in Spybot. You can safely ignore it.

V,

See DSL Reports' SBC DSL FAQ for avoiding installing any of the SBC provided software. None of it is needed under most circumstances.

The "DSO Exploit" has long been known to be a 'defect' with Spybot.  Assuming you have been properly using Windows Updates, your system should not be at risk from the DSO exploit.  However, if Spybot reporting it still bothers you, you may fix the situation by downloading/installing the following "fix" from MajorGeeks:

BEFORE DOING SO, be sure you have installed version 1.3 of Spybot S&D.
Then, download/install the above fix.
(You may have to reboot your system at this point.... I'm not sure if this is required.... but best to play it safe.)
Run Spybot.   It should now be marked as version 1.3 .1 TX
The scan will find the DSO exploit problem.  When asked, click to remove/fix the problem.
This time, the "fix" should hold... that is to say, the NEXT time you run the scan, Spybot should no longer find the DSO exploit.

Yes.  Thanks.  It worked perfectly.

I have noted all the suggestions regarding the dsl switch.

Once again, thanks for all the great help!  --V
