where to put 'hijackthis log file

Hi,

I posted on the dell comm. forum asking if anyone knew where I could go to find out how to re-install IE. I was then told where I could go to generate a 'hijack this' scan, and create a log file. I have the file on a notepad, now where am I supposed to put it so it can be checked for errors?

here is a link for IE

to copy your HJT log, open the text file select Control A->> RT click->> copy and paste it as a reply to your original post

I tried to paste the file in here, but It wouldn't let me. It said that it contained invalid html code, remove the code, make changes and resumit when I was satisfied with it.

What problems are you having?  Your log is not complete so I can't be sure but I don't see anything evil running in what I do see.

Do another Scan and Make log then when the notepad comes up do Edit, Select All then Edit, Copy then open a reply to this message and Edit, Paste.  Then add a little bit at the bottom about what your problem is.

Read this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165?
Does that sound like your problem?  we are getting a lot of complaints about this upgrade even from folks without HP products.

OK here it is again.
Problems> an example: this morning I was trying to compose an email and I also had another window open so I could info from 2nd window.  Wwen I went back to my email [1st window] I found that, on the rt. side of page [behind actually] it had the page that always comes up-"This page cannot be displayed......etc..."So I had to copy my half composed email, close all windows, and open IE again and start all over.
This happens many many many times! It happened about 3 times in 45 minutes while TRYING to compose an important email.
example> When I am in IE, my pc disconnects itself. I have dial-up [only choice] and I will be working away only to look up and find that I have been disconnected. These things do not happen in Firefox. It is driving me crazy!  Do you have any ideas??Thanks, Sandy

You might try to uninstall Google Web Accelerator and see if that makes a difference.

Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel to open the Windows Control Panel.
Click on Add or Remove Programs to open its window.
Click on Google Web Accelerator. A Remove button will appear below the Google Web Accelerator item.
Click the Remove button.
Close the Add or Remove Programs window and the Windows Control Panel.

Also remove SpeedNet the same way.

Otherwise since you say it is only in IE from IE, Tools, Manage Add-Ons and disable all of the addons.  Close IE and reopen.

See if that makes a difference.  IF it does then turn them on one at a time and see if you can find the one that causes the problem.

You have a bunch of remnants in your log but nothing that looks bad.

Close Internet Explorer, run HJT (scan only) and check these then Fix Checked.

Some people complain about this line slowing them down.  You can remove it too if you want to.

You can look for rootkits:

download and run blacklight
F-Secure Blacklight: http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
click > scan then > next,
If any items show have blacklight rename them except for wbemtest.exe"
Do not rename "wbemtest.exe" it's a windows file
The tool will ask if you want to reboot (restart) choose yes.

I did everything that you suggested. Removed all the remnants and google web acc.
The secure blacklight did not find anything.

I have waited this long to see how things went.   It doesn't seem like IE has been crashing as much, but something keeps disconnecting my pc. It will probably do it once every hour, sometimes more, sometimes less.

Thank you for all your help, Sandy

Try a few of the free scans and see if they find anything but I suspect you may just have some corrupted files or a bad ISP link.

Hi,

Thanks for the links, but I have the paid version of Lavasofts Adaware w/Adwatch, paid v. P.C.Doc Pro 3.5, paid v. Registry Mechanic, paid v. Avg 7.0-so I think I have pretty good protection. But I did TRY to download SpyBot search&destroy and ya know, I have been having trouble downloading things for the past couple of weeks. My pc disconnects from internet when I try to download usually, or it just aborts the download over and over. I got to thinking about this and it seems like it has been like this since I downloaded 'Download Accelerator Plus'[DAP}. Yep, when the downloads DO go thru, I get them faster but I wonder if the problem with pc disconnecting during download-is DAP the cause of that??
Can't seem to win my battle with pc problems. Get one thing working better just to have something else not working right!!! I wonder if Mr. Microsoft has pc problems? yea right.
Do you know anything about DAP?

Any third party software that gets in the way of a download is suspect when you are having download problems.    Supposedly DAP is not malware but that doesnot mean it will work on all PCs.

It could also be a telephone line problem.  Pick up your phone (hopefully not a wireless) and dial 5 and listen.  Is it nice and quiet or do you hear "bacon frying" or static in the background?  (If you hear noise it's your local telephone service that needs work.  Try disconnecting all but the one phone and see if it's a bad phone.)    Hangup and call the same number your modem uses to get to the ISP.  Does the modem tone sound strong and clean or does it have noise and/or a weak sound to it?  Try it a few times since they will have many lines at their end.   A weak or noisy signal indicates your ISP is having problems.  You can complain to them or just change ISPs.
