Winantivirus

Two things happen when I log onto the Internet, either I get a popup advertisement that is curtesy of____ engine (can't remember the first name) or I get a dialogue box that warns of virus and offers the Winantivirus and it doesn't matter whether I click cancel or OK, I still get hijacked to their download webpage, many times (not always) my Internet Explorer freezes and I have to do alt delete to get to the Program Mgr to 'End Task.'   I followed the Hijack This  directions and below are the results of the scan:

Hi,
Let's start by renaming your C:\Program Files\HijackThis\ HijackThis.exe file.

Rename it so it is called Analyzer.exe, the entire entry will now look like this:

C:\Program Files\HijackThis\ Analyzer.exe.

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log in this thread here, please do not start a new thread.

Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to these:

Close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix Checked". Close HijackThis.

I think that file will be gone but check here and delete the UpMedia FOLDER if it still exists:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ UpMedia--FOLDER

Reboot.

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSypware Free for Home Users

  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe to install and use the default settings for installation.
  • Run SUPERAntiSypware and update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Udates".
  • When done, select "Scan for Harmful Software".
  • There are three scanning options available. Choose "Perform Complete Scan" and click "Next".
  • When done, a Scan Summary will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Place a checkmark next to items you wish to remove/quarantine and Click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • Please post the results of the SuperAntiSpyware log in your next reply.
  • Select close to exit the program.
Note: If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.

Also include a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how things are running.

Great!!  That seems to have worked.  I loaded SuperAntiSypware, ran a complete scan, but I couldn't figure out how to get a copy of the log.  It wouldn't let me do a right-click-copy-paste.  It did quarantine Adware tracking cookies, Trace.known threat source, and Trojan.Searchtool.
 
Now my question is, why did the free SuperAntiSypware work so much better than the $99 PC-cillin version that Dell sells?  I do regular scans and this virus still slips in...
