No question that whatever one's default browser, IE should be upgraded to 11. I do miss some of those gadgets, however. I believe this was implemented last year.
I had already updated to I.E. 11, the few gadgets that are accessible by right clicking on the homepage and hitting gadgets still will let you use those eight or so gadgets, but that's about it.. IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A CHANCE AND USE THEM?
This is the message you get on the gadget's page:
Gadgets have been discontinued
Gadgets are no longer available on our website because the Windows Sidebar platform in Windows 7 and Windows Vista has serious vulnerabilities. Microsoft has retired the feature in newer releases of Windows. Gadgets could be exploited to harm your computer, access your computer's files, show you objectionable content, or change their behavior at any time. An attacker could even use a gadget to take complete control of your PC. If you're concerned about the safety of gadgets you’ve downloaded, find out more about gadgets and steps you can take to protect your PC.

Not sure when/how I implemented this, but I just checked my registry, and confirmed the Sidebar ("Home of the gadgets") has already been disabled.

I actually didn't even notice this had happened. Although I haven't updated I.E. and should, maybe I'll do that now....
