"Solution is actually pretty
simple. Go to Windows update. Click on change settings (on the left). Check
"never check for updates." Remove any other checks (Recommended update and
any other). Then go back to Defender and run the Updates again. Version
downloaded should read 1.15.2336.7. It will also download a couple? of
Windows updates. After, don't forget to go back to Win updates and change
back to auto setting." (post by Robert531)
Been there, done that. I can assure you that the "new" version is the same as the one I uninstalled. Open Defender, click on the down arrow (to the right of the
? mark)>
About Windows Defender, and it's still version 1.1.1593.0.
so it's not acknowledging any new March 2007 version.
MajorGeeks
claims to be offering the new version 7, but I am
not gonna test things by uninstalling what I already have. I use the current version to look for updates, and it's not finding anything except for the usual "definition" files.
for what it's worth (or worthLESS ???), here's the MajorGeeks link:
MS did release an update to Defender on March 13, but mistakenly called it Version 7 at the download site from MS. This has been corrected to version 1.1.1593.0, which is what it shows now:
This is what I downloaded, and is working well. The changes must have been pretty minor- and probably directed at those still using Version 1592. However, the link above is the latest version.
Note that the Defender Version is different from the Definition Version (currently 1.16.2420.2 created 16/03/2007).
