I looked at the website you posted and tried to one and two, but could not find windows defender on the list to remove. I even tried to just reinstall it but it says it is a part of Vista and cancelled the installation. As for #3, it was way over my head. I'm not sure what to do with that. Any other suggestions?

Sorry, I don't use Vista. I do know that Defender is integrated into Vista and cannot be uninstalled.
Perhaps the following will help:

If not, hopefully a Vista user can jump in here with some advice.
Good luck.

Are you using Windows OneCare, Norton Security Suite, or McAfee 2009 Security? All have been known to conflict with Windows Defender.
