Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close

Hi,
I am new to this. I am not a computer expert, but I try to fix problems myself, and with a little help I think I can tackle this. Recently I started having a problem. I open My computer, then local disk c, then documents and settings, then Kevin which is one of 4 folders to choose from, then my documents. Sometimes I get past this and am able to open my documents and then my downloads before I get an error message that states "Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". One time a box came up that stated "Dr. Watson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". This message is what led me here. Most times the window then closes. The only thing that happened around the same time this started (that I know of since I have 3 family members using this computer)is that I was attempting to access some music files that had been downloaded. Since this problem has happened I have run spybot and adaware. I currently am also running Norton which is up to date. Below I have pasted the information from hijack this as instructed.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

  http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe

  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
  • Save it to your desktop and run it.
    Click Next, then Install, then make sure  "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
    The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
    You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
    Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.






At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

Sorry I forgot to include this.  I can now access the files with no error message.  I have not spent a lot of time on the computer, so unsure of any other problems.  In simple terms can you tell me what we have fixed so far, and possibly what might have caused it.  Thank you very much for your help.

The infection is called "wareout" it came from the internet, where exactly I cannot say.

1. *NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.


  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced." deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

2. Please perform an Ewido Online Malware Scan


  • When a dialog box appears asking you if you would like to download and install the ewido anti-spyware online scanner please click Yes to allow the download.
  • Click on Start Scan.
  • after the scan completes i twill produce a log for you, copy and paste the results of that scan as a reply to this thread
  • If any infections are found, (After you save the logfile), Click on Remove Infections.
