As I said earlier I only learned about spyware a couple of days ago and I did install and run spybot and ad aware. The first tiem I ran spybot it found and cleaned over 100 problems. I uninstalled Kazaa which I believe was the cause of the spyware (problems seemed to coincide with my daughters downliading songs) However I still have problems with spyware and popups, I ran spybot again this am and it found 12 problems. Is it common to have spyware everyday and have to run spybot everyday??

ANyone see anything on the hijack log I posted? Still getting the windows installer box popping up.

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary. Please delete the old copy (including the zip copy) so it can't be used.
======================
Check these in hijackthis, AND WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, fix checked.

I was able to "fix checked" on the hijack log but you lost me on the "reboot to safe mode" and deleting the files and folders. I was able to unhide the folders but I don't know how to find the folders you say to delete such as the sysytem P2P networking etc. Can you give me step by step instructions?

Thanks for all your help so far.

I will try.

Right click on the start button, explore.

That will open 'Windows Explorer' - This is the file manager system for windows.

It has two 'panes' in the window - the left showing the drives & folder, the right showing the files (or subfolders) in the current active folder from the left pane.

Find in the left pane the folder you have the file in (click to select it), then in the right pane find the file you wish to delete (or copy or anything else).

Right click the file, and choose delete from the little menu. That should delete the file.

Repeat untill all those that you need to delete are done.

If you need to delete a folder do the same but right click on the folder (in left or right pane) and choose delete.

============

Please post back with a new hijackthis log, after a reboot.

Hi...Chris is in England and I'm the night shift here. *;-)

First...please relocate your hijackthis.exe file to a safe folder:

FAQ's 2,3,4 at http://www.russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/faqhijackthis.htm

Run Hijackthis in new folder C:\HJT, scan and check the following line entries:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntholder.exe
Comments: hostile file

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\dge.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\dge.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\dge.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\dge.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\dge.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\dge.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
Comments: Tough new CWS variant...we will probably need to followup later with new fix mentioned by Chris today. Check it for now...it will almost certainly return.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {93E32CF3-3D08-4163-A889-08D326EECEC6} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\dge.dll

O3 - Toolbar: My &Search Bar - {0494D0D9-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\1.bin\MYBAR.DLL
Comments: My Way Speedbar malware

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
Comments: don't check this one, but look at this page for comments about the intrusive nature of this component.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AltnetPointsManager] c:\program files\altnet\points manager\points manager.exe -s
Comments: Kazaa plug-in...not needed to load automatically

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pFsk36e] ntholder.exe
Comments: hostile file

With no other windows open except for Hijackthis, click on fix checked button.

Next: Reboot to SAFE MODE and Show HIDDEN FILES and folders

FAQ 8 and 9 on this page: http://www.russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/faqhijackthis.htm

Open Windows Explorer: type the word explorer at Start/Run box and click OK:

Drill on down and delete the following files and/or folders (look carefully, but some may not be present):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntholder.exe   file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dge.dll             file

C:\Program Files\MyWay         folder and all subcontents

Reboot in normal mode Windows and run Disk Cleaner: type cleanmgr at Start/Run. Scan all hard drives and check all categories at the end and click OK.

Besides Spybot I would suggest you run Adaware as it catches things not detected by Spybot and will help clean up debris from the MyWay Speedbar.

Chris has posted an excellent tutorial by dgosling on how to run Spybot S&D and also how to enable customized deep scanning functions for Adaware. Once you set these options they will be retained for future scans by Adaware.

Follow the directions in this detailed guide for Spybot and Adaware...go slow on the directions for the custom setup of Adaware:

http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/spybot-adaware.html

Browse a bit and run a fresh Hijackthis log and post it here for us to look at. Report any issues or comments.

After the final all clear is given by us you should flush your Restore Points for XP. That means disabling the Restore Point, rebooting to flush it, then re-enabling a new Restore Point. The reason why we need to do this is to purge the bad files hidden in System Restore which can't be cleaned by your antivirus programs.

See FAQ 12 here: http://www.russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/faqhijackthis.htm

All the best,

Texruss

If you can't get Hijackthis by download, click on my name above the Duck icon on the left of this page - and use the email link to send an email to me - I will reply with a copy of the file for your use.

I did what you said...I think. However when I tried to download HJT I got bombarded with numereous spyware popups to the point where my computer froze and I had to reboot. The same thing happened when I went back and tried to look at the link you sent with "the new fix by Chris". So I rebooted again and ran Spybot s & D and Adawae both of which found numerous problems which were fixed. AFter that, feeling totally dejected, demoralized and totally teed off I went to bed. I am now at work, will try to send a HJT log when I get home. It is pretty bad when you would rather be at work than at home messing with the computer.

It did occur to me tho that the spectrum of people in this world range from those that develop things like spyware on one end (the lowest of the low)to those people like you, Chris and the others who spend their time trying to help poor clueless people like myself. Thanks.

>when I tried to download HJT I

You actually have the latest version already...I just want you to make a new folder and move the current hijackthis.exe file.

All the best,

Texruss

This is the latest HJT log..it looks different then the one we were working on last nite when things went haywire. I feel like I am at square one again and am so incredibly demoralized by this. Please look at my log and help me if possibly can. You can't possibly know the appreciation I feel for the people like you and CHris in this forum

Don't give up the ship...there is more than one way to skin a rat.

First...see if you can create a new folder for Hijackthis.exe file in the root level of C (name it HJT). Move the hijackthis file into it or reextract it from the zip file and MAKE it extract to the new folder (browse to correct folder).

FAQs 2,3,4  http://www.russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/faqhijackthis.htm

Here is my new log. It looks like the stuff I checked to fix is still there? When I was i safe mode and checked the HJT scan they were gone, but seem to be back now. The part where you said to go to explorer and delete the System 32\gefbp.dll..I could not find that file. Don't have the pop up spyware I had last night but I still get that windows installer box popping up telling me it is preparing to install...?

Again, thanks for your help

It's a hidden .dll reinfecting...new fix available for XP and W2K only. Try this and see if you have success:

Shadowwar has come up with a fix for the hidden dll (only win2k and XP)

http://tools.zerosrealm.com/dllfix.exe

Doubleclick it and install in folder of choice but on the root drive, most likely C:\

1.Run start.bat and press option 1. 'output.txt' will be created in the folder

(note : it's best to post that report together with a HijackThis log in your topic, so experts can have a look as well)

2. IF hidden dll was successfully found, run start.bat again and choose option 2. Hit '1' and enter dll name manually.

3. If dll was not found after first running start.bat :

Run start.bat again and choose option '2'. You must reboot after doing so.

4. Download and run AdAware : http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ (make sure you have latest updates) and run it.

5. Ask for a new hijackthis log, a new output.txt after the fix

6. You can also run CWShredder finally to clean up other entries
