Thanks for the info. but despite this, I keep getting an icon on my taskbar informing me that I have updates ready to download. This refers to the update for the Malicious Software Removal Tool which has already been downloaded for August (twice). No other updates at this time. Any idea how I can prevent this from appearing?
I'm not really sure why auto updates keeps informing you that you you have updates to download after you have downloaded them. Try going to the update site and see if after it scans your computer it still says you have new updates.
Per schedule, there is a new Malicious software removal tool released every month, on the 2nd Tuesday... which would have been 9 August. However, since the most recent version of this tool is dated 18 August, it would appear that additional versions have been released this month, probably due to all the problems/publicity of the Zotob worm. This would explain the multiple updates you've been advised about.

Actually I don't have an answer. When you went to the update site did it say there were any updates for you? I would try turning off auto updates and restart your computer. Once you've restarted, turn auto update back on. I take it you have it set to just notify you but not install?
After Microsoft Update scanned my computer...it still tells me (on the taskbar) that I have updates to download. Can you think of anything else that would help?
After your post and my downloading the tool again the icon disappeared from my tasbar. Now it is back again...so is there another update since 18th August...if not I still have my problem...any ideas to remove the icon please..
Yea, I saw that ...... sounds like there's a problem with the tool though and wanted to see if we could figure out a way to solve it instead of just hiding the entry in Automatic Updates.

The tool automatically uninstalls itself after it runs on your computer.

aryeh,
just make sure it will hide only THIS month's (August's) update, and not all future updates of the malicious software tool...
