windows seems to be lost

I downloaded SpyBot Search and Destroy to try to rid my computer of parasites and when I did I lost everything. I am not able to access much of anything in my computer. Message reads ' This file does not have a program associated with it for performimg this action. Create an association in the Folders Options control panel'. I am not able to access SpyBot to restore what has been lost and when I called Dell the rep got kind of rude so I don't really want to call back. Is there any help available to me? I am not able to get into my system restore ar any other tools. I am at a loss.

Telam,

Can you tell me what Spybot located and removed? Are you able to download files on another computer and run them on the pc that's having trouble?

Mike...It has been a while since I ran Spybot and I only remember a LOT of things. It has removed my windows media player, my system tools, just about everything. Even my internet explorer. I read somewhere that they may of been sent to my recycle bin, but they were not. I cannot get into SpyBot either. When I go to my folders options in the control panel, it says just about everything is gone and I do not know how to create new files for things. I am unable to access anything but my MSN and the web. I have gone into my program files system 32 to try to open up programs, but I keep getting the same error message. I am so lost. Just like a little puppy. Thanks.....Telam

Telam,

Which operating system are you using?

If your operating system supports it, have you tried:

1) " sfc /scannow" from a command line.
2) A repair installation of the operating system.

Mike, I am using Windows XP Home Edition. I believe it is a demension 4400. If I knew how to dig down deep, I may be able to find what I have lost. But that is too simple I know..Telam

Hi again Mike. It seems like it is more than just files. I tried to reinstall Windows media Player and I cannot do that either. I don't know how to do a repair or restore or anything else without getting into my tools. I am also not able to get into my updates. I keep getting the same message. There is no association for preforming the action. I guess I am more computer illiterate than I thought. Oh Mike....which way do I turn?   Telam ( Terri)

Telam,

If it's just files, we can try to restore them from your system disks. After that, you might try windows update and see what it decides to re-install.

Sometimes when we dig too deep, we're standing in a hole ... :)

Terri,

Does the basic low-level dos commands still work? Here's information about a repiar install. Have you considered a 'clean' installation of windows?

Hi Mike....I have just about given up on my computer. I tried doing a repair and the computer will not accept my administrater password. I cannot get into my accounts to try to fix this either. I am at a complete loss. I cannot download anything either. I guess I will have to wait til after the 1st of the year and then try to find a solution besides wiping the whole thing.

Telam,

When you bootup, can you get to the BIOS bootup options to select "Last Known Good Configuration"?

Terri,

Maybe someone on one of the other forums can help you recover the file(s) your referring to, it that's possible. Even if you recover them from the recycle bin, i'm not quite sure how your going to recover the registry entry(s) without being able to run the program that deleted them.

Good luck,

Mike.

Hi Mike....I have tried that already. I know that somewhere, lurking inside my computer, is the information that I have deleted. I just don't know which direction to go now.   Terri
