Windows Update error code 80072EFE

Question

Currently running Vista SP2 and over the last few weeks I cannot get any Windows Updates and my browser search links are redirected. Currently it says 'Windows cannot check for updates'. If I try and install them I get the 80072EFE error. I have tried several things including running my antivirus software (Avast), Malwarebytes, Spybot, and AdAware and none fo these seems to have solved the problem.
