my personal preference is to download the MANUAL (OFFline) installation version (16 MB). but if you prefer the online installation, that choice is yours.
AFTER you successfully install the new java, please verify that it has been activated (and the micrososft version DE-activated....) I believe you can do so in internet explorer by clicking on TOOLS,
Internet Options,
Advanced,
make sure that Java (Sun) Use JRE 1.5.0_06 for (applet) is checked,
and that any reference to Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine is[/are] UNchecked.

At that point, I'm gonna try to ask someone else to step-in, to determine additional problems (if any) that you might have. Please be advised that we're very "understaffed" at the moment, so I can't make any guarantee as to when the next helper will arrive.
Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained) and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site.
One way to make an infection more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new.
Make sure you have removed any older versions of Java or JRE with Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Updates do not remove the older versions which have exploitable flaws.
If you are not running the latest version of Adobe you should consider updating. There are reports of a loophole for hackers in pre 7.03 versions. As an alternative you can dump adobe completely and use fox-it instead: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

RKinner for your assistance...you guys rock! I can't tell you how annoying that winfixer problem was; it was driving me nuts! ky331, i followed your advice and used HJT to remove those two BHO items. I did d/l the new java and unchecked the only thing checked off under Microsofts virtual machine.
Ron, I do run Zone alarm now (d/l it after I got the winfixer problem) and also use both adaware and spybot. I will check out the other's you reccommended (do any of these programs have conflicts with each other?).

None of the program conflict with each other. The free versions all get along fine.
My recommendations are generic. I do not try to modify them for each client so if you have Zone Alarm already that's fine.
Definitely uninstall the Java 2 Runtime Environment SE V1.4.2. That's exactly what we mean when we say uninstall the older versions.
There were also 2 new patches released by Microsoft on Tuesday. Make sure you get them. One of them patches another hole that winfixer has been known to use to get on your system.
is the new java 1.5.0_06 not showing up in your control panel??
no, it's not, only the older version is showing up there. After i delete the old one, should I reinstall the new one again? It does show on my internet options advanced tab.
UPDATE: It does show up as: J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 update 6...that's it then, right?

Looks like VirtumundoBeGone successfully deactivated the bad WinFixer/Vundo file... have you noticed any difference, in terms of WinFixer popups, warnings about trojan vundo/virtumundo, and/or overall system speed/performance?

A Few Recommendations:
Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained)
and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site.

One way to make an infection more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new.

Make sure you have removed any older versions of Java or JRE with Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Updates do not remove the older versions which have exploitable flaws.
If you are not running the latest version of Adobe you should consider updating. There are reports of a loophole for hackers in pre 7.03 versions.
As an alternative you can dump adobe completely and use fox-it instead:
