Hi Guys I ran VundoFix just now.  Everything went as described in ky331's instructions. When I restarted the computer, however, I still got the Winfixr popup.  So here is my hijackthis logfile. I will post separately the VundoFix logfile in the next reply. download RegSeeker from: http://www.hoverdesk.net/dl/en/RegSeeker.zip UnZip it ... it will create a folder a folder of its own (a RegSeeker folder) containing a bunch of files.   Restart your computer and boot into SAFE Mode... if SAFE mode allows to you specify a user/login, then log-in with your usual login name. Hopefully, you'll still be able to locate the RegSeeker folder in SAFE mode.  Go there, and open/run the RegSeeker program.    Click-on  Find in Registry... then place a check-mark in all of the HKEY options and where it asks about search for , you should type in: NI.UWA6P_0001_N69M0303 [if you can, COPY this from here, and PASTE it into there] and click on SEARCH. When it finishes, click-on Select ALL... which expands into a small menu from which you need to again choose Select ALL (you should notice some changes in color, as the items found are highlighted). right click on the highlighted selections and choose Delete Selected Items. Reboot into regular mode, generate another HJT log, and hopefully, it should be gone this time.   Please REPLY and post your this latest log.

Thanks a lot. I ran RegSeeker just as you said. When it finished searching, there were no items displayed. Still, I clicked on SELECT ALL, and clicked again on SELECT ON on the expandable menu, but nothing happened. I restarted the computer and got the following HJT log. NI.UWA6P_0001_N69M0303   Since you said RegSeeker didn't find any items, I have to ask... is it possible that you mis-typed this long combination of numbers, letters, periods and underscores (assuming you manually typed it in)??   alternatively, if you were able to copy/paste it, are you sure you didn't include any blank spaces at the beginning or end?   I would suggest you try running RegSeeker again, to be extra sure this was copied-in EXACTLY.... if you were off by even a single character, it won't find it.   By the way, if nothing is found again, just stop there... don't want to risk 'tampering' with things, if they're not proceeding exactly per directions.   Please REPLY here, let us know what happened this time... and if RegSeeker does find it, please be sure to include an updated HJT log.   I'm gonna try to ask someone else to step-in, to continue further analysis.

You were right. I did have a typo. Ran it, it detected and deleted the specified file. Here's the Hijack Log now.  The winfixr pop-up no longer comes up, which is great! as indicated, i've put in a request for someone else to continue the analysis, as i basically "specialize" in certain problems (such as WinFixer)....

please try to be patient... as long as IE is working now (I hope), you should be able to get-by with that for the time being.

by the way, when you say firefox "doesn't work"... can you elaborate??? it doesn't open at all? or it opens, but then you have other problems with it as you try to surf?? try to be explicit, and include details of any error messages that you receive.

A few Recommendations.

You can delete any programs we had you install but leave Hijackthis for now. You can also run Hijackthis, View the List of Backups and Delete All. If we used killbox its backup files can be removed now too. Run Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups. If you have an antivirus, check its quarantined files and delete any it had found.

You should also definitely toggle System Restore Off and then back On.

Following site has very clear instructions for turning it off. To turn it back on you just repeat the instructions but uncheck the box where it says to Turn Off System Restore on all Drives.

The reason we do this is to remove any archived copies of the infection from System Restore so that if you have to use SYstem Restore to fix a problem you won't accidentally reinfect your system. The next link explains how to use System Restore to go back in time if you hit a bad site or get infected.

One way to make an infection more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new. You do this by None of the Above Just start the program, Config (Main) and then check the box in front of Run Hiajckthis at startup and show it when items are found. OK. Then if Hijackthis opens after a boot it will show you any new programs that have been added. You can then decide if you want to keep them or not. If in doubt you can google for the .exe or .dll file at the end of the entry and see if what other people think of it.

It was added by the latest version of Java. We don't know why. Earlier versions did not have it. It has been proven to slow down connections on some systems and removing it doesn't seem to hurt anything.

THese are from the MyWay Adware program installed on most Dells. The uninstaller was broken on many of them.
To remove just close Internet Explorer, run HijackThis (scan only) and check them then Fix Checked.

If you are not running the latest version of Adobe you should consider updating. There are reports of a loophole for hackers in pre 7.03 versions.
As an alternative you can dump adobe completely and use fox-it instead:

If you do not have an antivirus program or the one you have was a trial that has expired then try the free antivirus for home users from Avast!

If you run Macromedia Flash make sure you have the latest version. We just got a warning the following versions are vulnerable:
* Flash Player 8.0.22.0 and earlier
* Flash Professional 8
* Flash Basic
* Flash MX 2004
* Flash Debug Player 7.0.14.0 and earlier
* Flex 1.5
* Breeze Meeting Add-In 5.1 and earlier
* Adobe Macromedia Shockwave Player 10.1.0.11 and earlier
