I am sorry, I should have mentioned that - yes, I did unzip it before burning to CD.

I tried copying the file from the d drive to the c:\windows\system32 and received the message "the system cannot find the path specified".

what does that mean?

You said you burned it to a c/d. Did you extract the info before copying it to a c/d? The original is in a zip-file.

Glad to here it. Yes those phony anti spyware warnings are very convincing, yet once clicked, thats when the trouble begins

If we can help with anything else, please reply

If you are doing this by the way of C:> then your syntax must be exact, with proper spacing. The message you are getting is  probably a syntax error.

Please reply with a link to the post you are refering to for your fix, and I'll try to help

I think I have found part of the problem - why I am getting the message "the system cannot find the path specified".  - I looked for the system32 dir, and didn't find it in windows, I found it in winnt instead.

So, I went back through and did the dir search for the old wininet.dll file, and was able to copy and when I rebooted, it completed the reboot process and appears to be ok so far.  I am finishing my norton install now, and am going to run a complete scan.  Interestingly, when my desktop loaded, I got a balloon in the bottom right corner that appears to be one of those windows alerts, however, at closer inspection I realize it has some spelling/grammar errors - it says,"...click to download the mostup-to-date antipsyware...".  Hmmmm. Wish I had paid closer attention - because I am almost positive that I clicked that balloon yesterday when all this started going wrong!

Thanks so much for your help! I'll be back if I continue to have problems.

the common cause of wininet.dll is trojan.alemod. for procedures in getting rid of trojan.alemod and download a fresh wininet.dll to replace the corrupted one,  trojan.alemod removal

Hi, I am having the same problems as ' mbseverson.' Unfortunately I am not an advanced user, and am unaware of how to search for and copy the necessary files from the command prompt. I have downloaded the .dll files on another computer and have them unzipped on cd ready to go.

I can get to the command prompt in safe mode but dont know where to go from there.

ie.:

search for location of system32 (windows or winnt)
copy the files from the CD or this directory

any help would be appreciated!!

thanks,

Dave
