Worm.Win32.netsky ----Grad Student, Thesis, Please Help !!

PLEASE HELP!!!!  Working on my thesis, really really need my computer.

I continue to get popups that say Windows Security Alert and Spyware Alert that lead to internet sites for spyware cleaners.
The popups say the following:
Windows Security Alert:  Windows has detected and Internet attack attempt...
Spyware Alert:  Worm.Win32.NetSky detected on your machine.  This virus is distributed via....

I have IE 7 and my homepage has changed to an advertisment for Ulitmate Cleaner 2007.  I am also receiving a popup from Windows itself that says:   'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.'

Any and ALL help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you

Welcome to DCF :)

* If you have posted this log on another forum, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it.
Definition of cracked software:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_cracking

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.
The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them are counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state.

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* Have you already fixed entries using HijackThis? If so, please restore all the backups and then post another log. Please do not do anything else until you get further instructions.

* Please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures.
Please follow all instructions in sequence.

* If your replies do not fit in one post while we are handling your issue, please reply to yourself until all text is submitted. It may take several posts.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click Smitfraudfix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press " Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool";
it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

1.  I was not prompted to replace the wininet.dll file or to restart my computer ( I did restart it though as per your instructions).

2. There was no 'Delete all offline content check box' under the delete files tab only delete file, delete cookies, delete passwords, etc.)

3.There was 'Security Info' or something similar under the Web tab under Display

This will fix most of it, but perhaps not all. It is after 1:00 AM here, so I will not be able to reply for about 10 hours. Nevertheless, we can start cleaning.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe again.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press " Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report along with all others into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : Running option #2 on a non-infected computer will remove your Desktop background. You can reapply your desktop background again afterwards
.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display.
Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.
Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin

In your next reply please include:

1. The report from SmitfraudFix found here: C:\rapport.txt
2. A fresh HijackThis log

You may need several replies to post the requested logs; otherwise they might get cut off.

Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to the following:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2357FC16-D8FC-4BF6-AFCA-573F9BD52644} - (no file)
16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} - http://aolsvc.aol.com/onlinegames/chuzzledeluxe/popcaploader_v10.cab

If you, an Administrator, or Spybot did not set this, please fix this as well:
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but I suggest you place a checkmark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.
If you want access to these programs quickly, a better alternative would be to create a Desktop shortcut to them.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \"C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe\"
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
(Description: A small program that reminds you to register your Creative Labs product (i.e. sound card, video card). Unnecessary. Removing this will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
(Description: RealPlayer scheduler. Completely unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - Global Startup: America Online 9.0 Tray Icon.lnk = C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0\aoltray.exe
(Description: AOL system tray icon. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
(Description: Microsoft Office startup assistant. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a significant amount of system resources.)

Close all windows except Hijackthis and click "Fix Checked". Close HijackThis and reboot.

You can delete SmitfraudFix and its logs.
Let me know how things are running at that point. If all is well, we'll flush your System Restore.

Things seem to be running ok,  except for a few things.
1. A window with C:\Program Files\Dell has been opening startup each time I reboot
2. Also, just prior to the last rebooting, I received a windows message that stated ' Dr. Watson
    Postmortem Debugger needs to close...'

What do these mean?

Should I keep the SmitfraudFix and HijackThis websites under Favorites should I ever have to use them again? And, do I just delete the SmitfraudFix  Icon from my desktop or is there somewhere else I need to remove it from?

"Should I keep the SmitfraudFix and HijackThis websites under Favorites should I ever have to use them again?"
That's up to you. I hope you will not need them again. If you do, you can always come back here for help.

"And, do I just delete the SmitfraudFix Icon from my desktop or is there somewhere else I need to remove it from?"
Yes, just delete SmitfraudFix from your Desktop and also delete the report from here: C:\rapport.txt

Hopefully, now that you have rebooted, Dr. Watson will settle down. Your system has noticed changes and thinks you need help.

Go to Start>Run and type: msconfig. When System Configuration Utility opes, click on the Startup tab. UNcheck DS Agent.

Reboot. You'll get a message on reboot that you are using Selective Startup. Just check "Don't show me again..." and OK.

Let me know how things are running at that point.

HELP....I followed all the above directions.  It appeared to work.  Then this morning it was back on my desktop and my wifes.  Background is RED and there is a design right in the middle of the desktop.  I can move my cursor to the top left and close that desktop and then my original desktop is there.  However, I keep getting the Alert message and IE tries to open.  By the way, I do not utilize IE, I use Mozilla.  I can use my internet, mail, etc., etc..  Just keep getting the popups??????????????????????????

billh26, the instructions above were written for another person. The files on your computer are different. Please post your HijackThis log as a NEW Message at the top of the forum so you can start your own topic. See the announcement "HOW TO POST A HIJACKTHIS LOG" at the top of this board. Someone will help you as soon as possible.
