Replication during Migration

Can anyone provide some feedback considering the following scenario.

Have a client who has 2 Data Centers and are replicating their VMAX volumes using SRDF /S.

However they plan to introduce a third data center but also want to close one of their existing 2 dc's.(WITHIN CLOSE PROXIMITY)

My issue is that I need to think (tools) how they can migrate their data from the data center that will close and still have replication.

The new data center does not currently have VMAX and therefore cannot act as a target destination.

Would appreciate if anyone has had similar situations and what the solution incurred. Is it a case of lifting/shifting the VMAX to a new location and not have a DR site in the short term. Once the new site is up and running continue to replicate.

Additional note: The new dc has IBM SVC and DS8K behind SVC. Could we use SVC as a temporary target for our VMAX devices to maintain D/R. Use case for SVC is migration.

Is this feasible?? The client also has Avamar and DD and are also replicating these environments. New DC does not have any Avamar/DD h/w.

Hi Steve,

In most cases, you have to shift the box to new data center and start the replication again, But you have to stay some tiem with out DR, But in this case , you have the IBM SVC's at new site, in such case i would suggest you to go with open replicator Hot push, during your comfortable time and then you can proceed with incremantal push on a daily basis, take a flash copy of the target lun before you establish the incremental session just for safer side, repeat this process until you set up the DR again, Though its a tough process, your client will have some satisfaction that his data is some hough safe..

for Backups, you need to establish some sort of hardware at new site, other wise you have to stay with out backs until you setup the existing hardware back again in the new data center.

Hey

Thank you for your reply....makes sense.

Will look at the OR option to SVC.
