Yes, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter can work. But, you need to provide more information.

What operating system? The adapter should work with Windows 10 or Windows 8 as is, but if you're using Linux or an earlier Windows then you may need to install a driver.

Have you tried the adapter in another USB port?

Have you tried the adapter on another computer?

Do you know that the Ethernet cable is good? Have you tried it on a computer with a built-in Ethernet port?

Do you know that the router's Ethernet ports are working? Have you to connect to a computer with a built-in Ethernet port?

Hi,

- I have OS Win 11

- I tried on a different port, the same message appears

- I tried connect to another computer it worked without problem

- I tried on another computer with a built-in Ethern port and it worked without a problem.

- I connected to a laptop with a built-in ethernet port, there was no problem.

When connecting the adapter to the USB port, no warning / problem with the lack of a driver for all computer components appears. Today I did an overdue UPDATE of all drivers. 

In section Network Adapter Realtek USB FE Family Contoller appears for a moment and then disappears

When you connect it, open Device Manager to see if there are any warnings/errors. e.g.: yellow triangle with exclamation mark; a down-pointing  arrow; a red x.

I think I know what is causing this problem. Cause is adapter

I have adapter USB LANBERG NC-0100-01

After installing the package, the Realtek USB FE / GBE / 2.5G / Gaming Ethernet controller software - REALTEK works fine.
