Please check if the latest Realtek Audio driver( version 6.0.9071.1, A02) for your computer is listed in your Apps settings. At the left bottom of the taskbar, click on windows logo, Settings, select Apps. Also check device manager for the Realtek driver, right click windows logo, select device manager, expand Audio inputs and outputs. If there isn't a driver listed in Apps settings or device manager, download and install the latest Realtek driver from your Dell Product Support page. Just click on your Dell model number in link below, after, stroll down to latest Realtek audio driver in your Dell Product Support page, and then download / install onto computer.

Press the Windows + X keys on your keyboard and click on the  Device Manager option from the menu. Expand the Sound, video and game controllers menu by clicking on the arrow next to it. Right-click on your  audio device listed in the menu and choose the Uninstall  device option. Restart your computer.

"Expand Sound, video and game...." I do not have this.  I've downloaded every driver I can find associated with audio.  I've let Dell scan my PC for missing drivers or drivers that need to be updated and nothing.

Vostro 3400 Refurbished from Dell Outlet & the Realtek audio doesn't exist in Device Manager.  The speaker icon says "No Audio Output Device Installed".  Audio is enabled in the BIOS.  I'm running the latest BIOS, I rolled back the BIOS, did a clean install from another SSD, no change.  Looks like the Realtek chip on the motherboard is dead.  The headphone plug in trick does nothing.  Audio works over HDMI but that is using the Intel audio.  This is why I didn't notice it since this laptop is constantly connected to a TV.
