Vostro 5502 Upgrading Memory - Can't remove screws
I ordered an additional memory stick for my new Vostro and it is easy enough to install however my biggest issue is trying to remove the screws. I have several phillips that fit perfectly but these screws don't budge. Anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions? I may need to just take it to a shop but I didn't want to spend extra money. I've already been assured the warranty will not void by having this done so that is a plus.

@LizzyD323 Sorry, I misread your post. I thought you simply couldn’t remove the screws from the holes. If you mean you can’t even loosen them, I’m not sure what to tell you. Definitely make sure you use the right size head, because otherwise you can end up stripping the screw heads when applying force to remove them, which will only make it even more difficult. But if you’ve got a perfect fit and still can’t loosen them, then asking someone else to help or going to a shop is probably your best option. A shop shouldn’t charge much and might even do something like this for free. I once took a laptop to a shop because I had completely stripped a screw head and therefore couldn’t remove it. They had to drill it out and they didn’t charge me even for that.

@LizzyD323 Some systems have a bottom cover design that uses captive screws, which means that you can fully loosen the screws from whatever they’re fasten into underneath the cover, but you cannot remove them from the bottom cover itself. This design prevents screws from getting lost. If your system uses that design, just loosen all of the screws until they turn completely freely and then lift the cover away.

Yea I do have two captive screws in the corner which start the lifting process for the cover but the rest of the screws won't loosen at all. I stopped before I stripped the screws but will definitely have to enlist help from the shop. I just hope they have more luck than I did since I already purchased the stick from Dell.

Thank you. Many of the screws did not loosen at all. I ended up having to take it to a friends shop and they took care of it just fine.
