Downgrading Back to Windows 8.1

Win 10 update went very smoothly on 29 July but I noticed last weekend that I was unable to access Settings. Microsoft Support technician tried everything but was unable to rectify the problem and advised me to go back to my old operating system. However, I was unsuccessful with System Restore and also trying to downgrade to Windows 8.1 by using Windows.old. Can't use the Win 10 option in Settings obviously. Can't use the Win 8.1 Recovery disc supplied by Dell when I purchased the laptop or the Dell Factory Image Restore. The only option I can see now is to use my old Win 7 Home Premium disc to reformat my C:\ drive and install Win 7 and then try to use the Dell Recovery disc to reinstall Win 8.1. Will this method work and if not, what would you advise?

That's a bummer... but there might actually be an easier way.

If your F2 and F12 keys still work (mine's don't), you could use a rescue disk to regain access to settings and proceed to Dell recovery. Could spare you the effort of installing your old Win7...

hope it works out

Was looking up stuff on the web about booting to the optical drive and came across a tip for Win 10 to access Troubleshooting - you hold down SHIFT while clicking Restart - and after pressing F10 for "more options" found an option to Reset to Factory Image. Its taken most of the day to reinstall it but I'm finally back to Win 8.1.  I'll wait until next week to make sure all is as it should be and upgrade again to Windows 10.  Thanks for replying to my wailing, it was appreciated.
