What I was after was some sort of schedule as to when I could expect this.
I have read about the driver issues etc. that people trying the upgrade already have had. But since buying this machine, sold with a Microsoft OS, Microsoft have been pushing for me to upgrade, first to 8.1 and now to 10. The latter seems to be the final solution in a somewhat troubled OS evolution and the hardware this (only) 2 1/2 year old PC has is amply sufficient, only some Dell software (drivers) may cause issues.
Could I kindly ask again for when Dell plan to include this system on the list of those compatible with Windows 10 and with drivers updated?
It will help me deciding what to do in near/medium term future with regards to investing in new equipment, i.e. when and from where.
I/we have bought Dell workstations, PCs, laptops in the last 12-13 years, because the machines have generally been running well - once I have sorted out all upgrades and patches myself. The 'sticky' points have always been the MS OS/Dell support 'relationship'. And I appreciate here that supporting MS software as a reseller is not easy.
It would be nice if I could end up concluding that Dell is determined not to leave customers stranded or entirely to their on 'devices' in future, both within warranty and support periods - but also in cases such as this; where I have been sold a system for which I have had to provide a lot of debugging time (both for the Dell premium support staff and also MS support directly), and where the evolution is such that the bugs and flaws are ironed out over three OS releases in less than three years.
If you are not able to find an answer in the Product group then kindly pass on to those who can.
It is very disappointing that Dell are currently not supporting the XPS 8500 for Windows 10. This i7 computer is high spec and only about 3 years old! It is much higher spec then the majority of computers that can upgrade to Windows 10 without issues!
Perhaps the powers that be at Dell believe that those with XPS 8500 will chose to upgrade and buy a newer model from Dell. I have owned Dell computers for years. I have always found them to be solid and reliable.
However the failure to support the Windows 10 upgrade on a 3 year old computer, means that neither I or my colleagues will buy another Dell computer again unless they reconsider their failure to support the XPS 8500 re the Windows 10 upgrade...
Reading other forums regarding the XPS8500 Windows 10 upgrade, many other people are also very unhappy with Dell about this issue!
I do hope that Dell will reconsider their decision regarding this issue - Claire
While I was chatting with Dell tech support, after a painful upgrade to Windows 10, I was told that my 3 years old XPS 8500 was not supported with Windows 10 on it and that there was no plan of any kind for supporting it or even just testing Windows 10 on it. I was also told that my prepaid 4 years support plan will end if I was not going back to Windows 7!!!
Which I did...
And I also did revise my plan for buying a brand new XPS 8700 and other Dell equipment...
In the mean time, I get plenty of notifications from Ms urging me to swich to... Windows 10!
If Dell support insists that a system is kept with an OS on it that MS clearly tries hard to get users to abandon, then it is just about as crazy as it can get for systems this relatively recent and it will not endear customers to come back.......
Again, I will state sympathy for the difficulty in supporting MS software as a reseller (given the trouble MS seem to have themselves at times), but when you sell me an OS (Win 8 in my case) on a system that hardware wise is specified for some longevity, and MS shortly after says (twice) that their last OS is to be 'forgotten', then I feel cheated.
Could Dell please provide an official answer in here to the question I asked?
Hi Robin, Thank you, it would be really helpful to know what parts in the stock system besides the stock 1703 half-card wireless device do not work with Windows 10. If that is the only part that does not work I may look into upgrading that board. Perhaps Dell would like to sell me an upgrade kit? My system is way too new to buy a complete new system but I would be interested in buying a Dell certified upgrade kit.
I completely agree. I am very dis-satisfied with Dell for essentially abandoning the XPS-8500. Mine is two and half years old, runs Windows 8.1 with no real problems. When I talked to Dell I pushed what upgrades I would need to do to my 8500. The Dell rep told me it wouldn't be worth it, and it would be less expensive to simply replace the machine. I may do that, but I guarantee it will not be with another Dell, that is, unless they re-consider their abandonment of the XPS-8500. There are solid machines out there, other than Dell, are you listening, Dell?? How many lost customer's is an acceptable number?
I was one of the first to jump on that tread… and complain about Dell decision to drop the XPS8500!
I have an XPS 8500 that I loved. It ran like a boss for 3 years, @3.4GHz. A live monitoring application for a dozen IP cameras, a remote control application for a dozen Intel Galileo and Edison, 2 sophisticated CAT (Computer Aided Translation) tools, one FTP server application for all these applications, and Ms Office of course. Any significant storage is on the Cloud. But I had to go fast to Windows 10 for various reasons…
So, I was both stuck and *** off!
And, in a rush, no time for shopping, I bought a newer Dell XPS 8900 with native Windows 10 and I just transferred all these applications, as they were, without any problem, a piece of cake!!!
It runs like the boss of a boss @4.2GHz.
Then I really thought about it (which I should have done in the first place).
All my applications are available on the web (even the CAT and Ms Office), all my storage is on the Cloud, what do I need all these expensive GHz for?
So I revised my plan!
I bought an Intel Compute Stick. It runs like a boss @1.33GHz.
It does the job for USD 150., it’s perfectly mobile, my grandchildren have two beautiful legacy desktops (XPS 8500 and 8900) to play with, and overall, and my setup is probably closer to the “Grand Plan”!
The list of supported computers is at the top of the forum and the xps 8500 is not on it. There is many reasons why that could be from drivers not available to the fact that the machine was introduced in 2012. The windows 10 upgrade notification may tell you your system is compatible but it cannot guarantee that it will work as windows would use generic drivers.

It is not clear who you are replying to, but your post ads no value by merely stating what we have all known all along. It is, I'm afraid, entirely missing the point.
I too have a 2 1/2 year old XPS 8500 and want to echo what others have said: Two weeks ago I had to replace the 2 TB hard drive and I asked Dell what I would need to reinstall the OS. They sold me a new drive and a $39.99 USB key that installed Windows 8 Pro which was the wrong key for the machine they sold me (Windows 8 Home Edition). It took several days and a lot of research to discover why Windows wouldn't activate and that I didn't need a USB key to begin with. I have found that when I want to buy something I get helpful reps on the phone right away. When it comes to resolving a problem with what they sold me I can grow old waiting for help.
I am generally pleased with the machine (when it works) and don't want to ditch it less than 3 years after buying it; however, I am quite disappointed that Dell will not support Windows 10 with updated drivers. This is my 4th Dell (2 laptops and 2 desktops). I am now seriously considering going with another vendor.
