OS Help, Blue Screen, Stop error screen, Technical Information: *** STOP: 0X000000ED Please Help!
Okay, to start things off, I have a Dell Dimension C521. For the past 2 days, I keep getting this screen when I log in that looks like this...
"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.
If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.
(then it gives these 5 options.)
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Start Windows Normally"
I have tried choosing all of those, but it all ends up taking me to a blue screen,
The Blue Screen says on it, all the same thing.
"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0X000000ED (OX857DA368, 0XC0000006, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)"
Side notes, I haven't recently downloaded anything that would cause this.
I have been closing my computer by pressing the power button a few times, and I think that is the case.
If anyone can please help me, or anyone knows anything helpful about this, please post, I need this computer working as soon as possible, and please list step-by-step. I don't want to do a re installation because I have alot of important files on my computer, and I can't reboot because I've heard that will do nothing to help fix my corrupted operating system. Thanks in advance everyone.

I got the exact same error last night for no reason ... This is a hard-disk crash, but "may" be recoverable. Here are two things to try:
1. Turn off the comuter and insert the Windows CD and "boot from CD". The computer will load various basic drivers and Windows files, then give you 3 choices: Install, Repar, or Exit
2. Choose the Repair Console and wait for the "C:" prompt.
3. At the C: prompt, type "FIXBOOT", without the quotation marks, and press enter.
When this is done, remove the CD and try to boot the computer. If you get the same blue screen, repeat steps #1 and #2 above, but this time type: "CHKDSK /F /R", noting the spaces before each "slash" mark.
Check disk will take some time as it goes through every sector on the disk, checking and repairing. Again, after it is done, remove the CD and try to boot the computer normally again. If this fails, I am very sorry to have to inform you that you will probably need a new hard disk. The good news is that a computer shop can remove the disk and may be able to retrieve your files from it ... again, if it isn't a castatrophic failure (ie, hardware). Good luck. I'm going through the above process as I write this on my D830 ... with my fingers crossed.
