16 Bit MS-DOS Subsystem error

When I try to run the command prompt (start-run then type "cmd") I get an error that says:

Title: 16 Bit MS-DOS Subsystem

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.com
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0de8 IP:0104 OP:ff 1f 58 5d Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

Then I can click "close" or "ignore" if I click ignore, nothing happens (the message shows up again, then if I click ignore again the command prompt locks up) if I click close, it closes (obviously).

Does anyone know what this is caused from, and how to fix it? I would really like to be able to access my command prompt.

You can try running Denny's little 16-bit fix, but I'm not sure it will fix your exact problem. It won't hurt anything even if it doesn't fit the problem:

Otherwise, try running the Windows system file checker:
click start>run
type in: sfc /scannow
(space between sfc and /)
click ok
insert XP CD if sfc requests it. Reboot when it's done
