16 BIT MS_DOS Subsystem

I keep receiving pop up boxes with the above header. The rest of the message says:
C:\Windows\690140.exe, The NTVDM has encountered an illegal instruction. Chose close to terminate the application.

I have no idea what this is or how to get rid of it. No too well versed on problems with computers! Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Judy,
Go to Denny Denham's site at this link and download his little app to your desktop. Run it and your 16 bit problem should be fixed.

What program are you running when the error box pops up? Is it compatible with your version of Windows? You may have to reinstall whatever the application is and/or if you're using XP, you may have to set the compatiblity mode for the application so that XP can run it.

Thanks for responding Ron. I appreciate your help! To answer your question, I just came back to my computer, after being away from it for a couple of hours, and another box was there. So, it doesn't always happen when I'm in a program. The screen was dark, I moved the mouse and there it was. As I said before, the numbers before the exe are always different. I have gotten about 20 of these now. It's a mystery to me and I don't know why it's happening! I am running Windows XP and have never had this problem before. One other thing I noticed, is that I can't open Classmates.com. We are planning a reunion and I get some responses via email and I can't open them up. I also can't put Classmates.com in my browser and open it either. That is the only thing that I know of that has been different since these pop-up boxes started appearing. Any suggestions?

Suggest you immediately run thorough scans with up-to-date Adaware, Spybot, Windows Malicious Software tool and your antiviral program. Don't know anything about classmates.com but you may have gotten some malware on your PC at that site.

Glad the problem is solved. Want to tell us what the solution was so others can benefit from your experience?

Ron,

I thought my problem was fixed, but it isn't! I ran Adaware and that did nothing. Then I ran Spybot and the problem appeared to be taken care of for a while. I can't access
anything on the Windows page except for the first page. So, I couldn't get into Windows Malicious Software and do anything. I'm going to call Microsoft tomorrow and see what the problem is and I'll let you know. Thanks.

Are you getting an error message when you try to access the site?

If you're using Internet Explorer, the browser security level may be set too high for that site. you may have to add the Microsoft site to the exceptions list. In IE, click tools>intenet options
Click Privacy tab
Click Sites button
Enter the address for microsoft site in the box and click Allow button
