2 PROBLEMS: cdrom gives error and "page fault" blue screen error

1st problem:

I'm trying to backup my documents to a cd and when I insert my disc (I've tried numerous ones)  I get the message to "insert disk" .  I have a Dell Dimension 2400 and when I check the hardware devices from the System....it says that it is working fine.   I need to do a backup to before doing anything drastic to fix the next problem.

2nd problem:  Critical...

I get the blue page randomly and have been on the phone for over 5 hours with Microsoft to try to solve the problem of "PAGE_FAULT_..." ERROR and they did their best but to no avail.  There were some virus's on my pc, and they removed those, but the 'blue page' still comes up randomly.

HELP!

First, with the disk drive; uninstall the drive in the Device Manager then restart Windows and it will be detected and reinstalled.  This fixes the problem many times.  If it doesn't repost on the Desktops/CD DVD section so the people there can assist you.

Second, with the problems you are seeing and the fact you have had some viruses, that were removed, it's hard to tell what is happening with Windows.  You could try a "Repair" which is similar to a reinstall but when you boot from the Windows CD you select Repair rather than install.  If that doesn't work, considering the age of the PC, a complete clean reinstall is best - reformat the hard drive then install everything.  And the install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install the Intel chipset drivers (3) Install device drivers such as the sound and video (4) reinstall applications and restore backed up user data (5) Reinstall periperalys (e.g printers - and physically disconnect any peripherals before starting the reinstall).

EDIT/ADDED:  I forgot to tell you how to access the Device Manager.  Hold the Windows key down and then press the Pause/Break key.

Thank you for your advice, however it didn't solve the problem.   I accidentally clicked on 'solution' even though it wasn't solved.

I fixed the solution setting for you.

As for the problem, you might need to just skip to a reinstall of Windows.  If the stop errors are due to Windows getting corrupted by a virus you can probably fix without and install, but in my personal experience it is usually faster to just back up your data, then wipe the drive and do a clean installation from CD (or DVD if you have Vista).
