32bit to 64bit Operating System Swap
Hey,
I was hoping someone could help shed some light on this. Is the OS swap available and if yes what are the restrictions on the swap?
Studio Slim 540s Q6600 w/ 32 bit VHP, which is still under warranty and most of the Studio Slims are now offered with 64bit VHP so the drivers are available from dell.
I called Dell and referenced the DSN Document ID: 158098
I didn't get anywhere with them - everything from your processor doesn't support it, your motherboard won't support it to some quad cores support it but your doesn't (which I know is not true)..... The tech support told me I have to talk to customer care, customer care told me I had to talk to technical support after being very patient (55 mins worth) I asked to speak to a manager, which still ended up nowhere.
Any help or insight that you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Seonac,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
If you are in the US then Private Message me with your system service tag and I will look into this for you.

Hi Seonac, If you live in the US, then you can get the 64bit. However, of you live in the UK you wont.

Thanks for replying (both of you) but I don't live in the US or the UK, I live in Canada.
By the end of the 1st call I made to Dell yesterday, the technical service rep. was going to conference call the customer care dept. but their tools were down and they wouldn't have been able to do anything at the time. I was given a reference # and was asked if I would mind calling back in an hour when the customer care dept was back up and running, and of course when I called back I ended up going through everything all over again. By the end of the hour plus conversation -- during which time I received numerous excuses why the 64bit wouldn't work on my system, I was told eventually told by the manager that the OS swap wasn't valid for Consumer purchases....
I was just looking for confirmation of what systems this swap is valid for and if what the manager was telling me was correct, because to be quite honest I'm not really sure why I should believe him. I already had 2 technical support techs tell me that my system wouldn't work with a 64bit OS or the 64bit OS wasn't available for my system (Dell now sells my identical configuration with the 64bit).

I do know that Vista x64 will run on a Quad Core unfortunately my system at the time of purchase was not offered with the x64 Vista as an option and only came with the 32bit OS. But it came with 4 GB of RAM and am using it as a HTPC and would definitely like to take full advantage of what the system is capable of. Of course now that I bought the system and the 30 day return is past, the Studio Slim 540s is now offered with the x64 Vista (except the most basic lowest end configuration). So all the drivers are available for download from the Dell Drivers and Software Download site.
I was just really hoping the OS swap is valid in Canada (we always get the short end being soooo close to the states with none of the benefits). But as I said in my previous post the Manager I talked to said it was only not valid for consumers, which I assume to mean home users, but I really don't trust that explaination and would like some sort of confirmation who is hopefully a little more informed and has delt with the swap before.
Jesse L - Since I'm in Canada and not the US, I assume that you are unable to help me. Can you Refer me to someone who can?

All I can say is Good Luck...
I tried this Very same thing with my Vostro 1000, at the time I got WXPH on it, but after I'd gotten it wanted Vista HP on it, so I asked them to Swap was told couldn't do it because of the Code embedded in the Bios wouldn't allow it?
But I could buy the retail Version and it would work? I no more beleive this then the Moon is made of green cheese.
I got a Inspiron 1721 approx a month ago with Vista HP on it, and bought Vista Ultimate Upgrade Product RED from Dell.
Asked about getting the Drivers for it, all I get is your Laptop won't run it because you have 32bit memory in it at the 2gb stock that was put in it.
But I can get 4gb from them that will run it, I already told them I upgraded that as well already to 64bit memory, but still get it won't run it.
I was asking about Drivers not my capability to run it, I already know it can.
Then was told they couldn't help because Vista 64bit wasn't offered on it, OK for the most part I can see that.
BUT I bought the Laptop from them as well as the OS Upgrade, I think that qualifies for Tech Support since I also bought the Hardware from them, For crying out loud.
But after several aggravating Emails, and being told they could help me, But it would cost a nominal fee.
I decided to print out a list of what Drivers had been put on my Laptop, and set out looking at at least 50 laptop models that had been offered with 64bit Vista on them, and after about 8hrs I finely had them all.
As has been said they are there you just have to be willing to pull your hair out to do it. :emotion-2:
