I think you need to re-load the OS since I think there is no upgrade path from 32 to 64.  Be aware that there may be some issues on drivers for 64 bit os.    Personally I though of it but decided on sticking with 32 bit Vista for now.  I am guessing that the replacement for Vista will be 64 bit only.

Thanks for the response. I guess my main question is, is my processor/system compatible with 64 bit OS? I need to upgrade the memory in my machine, and know that 64 bit is the only way it will work. In the BIOS, it said my system was 64 Bit compatible, but when I go to load the upgrade for Vista, it says it's not. Is this a case of which you stated, needing to do a fresh install from a cd/dvd with the 64 bit OS on it, or is my system really not compatible with the upgrade. Feel free to ask any questions you might have. Thanks!

Hi
I am not sure about the Vista 64 bit upgrade disk but the Vista upgrade 32 bit disk can be installed as a clean install you can read on this forum about clean install with an upgrade disk !
And putting XP back on your computer is not going to work ether unless it is the 64 bit version !
It will say the same thing its not compatible !
Good Luck

I go to load the upgrade for Vista, it says it's not.
Hi
Are you saying you bought an { {upgrade disk}} and not the full disk}} to do an upgrade from Vista 32 bit to Vista 64 bit ?
If you did that is not going to work at all , you have to format the hard drive and install Vista 64 bit
on that drive there is no upgrade from 32 to 64 bit that is why it says it,s not compatible !
Edit
It would help to know what PC you are running also !

great to know, lol final question. Will I have to install the xp version I had on here, then install 64 bit vista? Obviously it being an upgrade means I can't format, and do a clean install with the upgrade disk, unless a previous version of windows is already installed correct? Again thanks for all the help!!!

Hi
Read this link and see if you can do it this way , clean install with the upgrade disk !

You may not need to format the disk it just has to be a clean install !
