A computer without a CD drive is like a....

Hi,
My computer thinks there is no disk in the CD drive even when there is.

I searched the archives of this forum but didn''t find this problem. I'm sorry my first post is only for help.

The CD player/recorder worked when the computer was new (though I had problems with it, which I assumed were user errors).

I considered taking the original re-install disks and starting over. But then I remembered--I can't read disks.

It's about a year old, an Inspiron 5100.

A computer without a CD drive is like....a telephone without long-distance service? a house without indoor plumbing? a washing machine without a spin cycle?

Try three things.

1) Reset your BIOS to Factory settings.
2)Remove LowerFilters and UpperFilters from Regedit...
Just type Regedit in RUN box and then click on OK...then Search for LowerFilters and UpperFilters through the Find option in EDIT menu. Once you find them, delete them.

If all this doesn't works then you will have to reinstall the operating system.

HI,

Is the CD drive recognised in BIOS during boot or if you enter BIOS

Take anti static precautions then, take the top off and check that the cables to the CD drive have not come loose

Try the BIOS reset previously mentioned

Failing this

New BIOS battery
New IDE ribbon cable
Try the CD drive on another machine
Replace the drive and cable, they are very cheap these days
